Why can’t U.S. car manufacturers, make some cars without chips?

I don’t really know if this is still possible, or how expensive it would be to retrofit the manufacturing process, but couldn’t some cars be made without chips like the old days.
I know personally, I’d prefer a more simple vehicle, especially for work, that didn’t cost thousands to fix when it broke.

Because vehicles have 142 sensors these days due to the constant Political drive for emissions monitoring.

I hope the manufacturers feel the pain. They caused this by shipping their supply and assembly chains overseas.

Because we have regulated and litigated ourself to death with all the added safety/efficiency features that require computing.

I'd prefer that on pretty much anything that runs, including tractors and equipment but we let them dictate this shite and now we are stuck with it...

Luckily I still have an old truck, an old jeep, and a couple of older tractors that I can work on... The increasing issue is finding parts...

Emissions control, airbags, squeezing horsepower out of undersized engines, braking, auto sensory because people can't drive or use mirrors. They have been putting chips or Microcomputers in cars at least 40 years.

You think this is bad. Autonomous self driving vehicles is the worst idea ever. Hackers field day.

Ding ding ding. We have a winner.

The truth is it takes billions of dollars to build a chip manufacturing facility and that facility will be out of date in about five years; billions more are required to revamp the process over and over again. So these companies flee (or only cultivate) to places where the area government is friendly to them: tax advantages, lower employee costs, fewer environmental/regulatory restrictions, minimal union involvement, etc. This has left us with only three major companies in the game and intel is the only such US company. Intel has stated that rising costs have forced them to start outsourcing some of their manufacturing to TSMC out of Taiwan.

No, a simpler car. They used to make cars that the average man with a little skill could work on. And that wasn’t a lifetime ago.

They are. Ford is loading up Kentucky Speedway with Vehicles. GMC is now having to order vehicles without sensors

I can’t believe I am agreeing with Indefatigable, but this is truth.

They are making bank on the repairs, by getting the automobiles back to the shop.

Wat? If the car plants were able to retrofit to make ventilators during the covid, why not make cars without chips or cars with significantly reduced chips?

They can't because of the emissions and safety standards that have been imposed on them by the government...

But then you wouldnt be forced to go to them for every little repair

quote:

ncluding tractors and equipment

Farmers have been suing for years now just for the right to work on their tractors. Pay 6 figures for them and then have to call the company for every little repair as a much higher cost.
