My personal opinion is that the US populous should be permitted to own anything that any law enforcement agency that is permitted to perform operations and act on US soil is permitted to own.

That does not include the military or agencies who function outside of the US.

So this article basically says that liberals would get destroyed in a civil war .

So, two responses almost back to back implying the kind of paranoia and fear spoken about in the posted article? Got it.

To protect ourselves when the US Govt fails to protect us from rioters, criminals and out of control illegals.......

Example, the Local Sheriff and FBI failed to protect the students of Browood County School in Fla. several weeks ago.......

A biased "study" from the left calls white gun owners racist?

That's a new tactic for regressives...

Scruffy doesn't really believe that. Scruffy only says that for the sake of argument in this thread. Because if Scruffy saw a neighbor parking a tank in his next door driveway, Scruffy wouldn't think that was cool or a symbol of freedom at all.

What government law enforcement agency is permitted to own a military grade tank?

Also, this, IMO, would reignite the hijacked anti-militarization of police movement, which I wholly support.

There can and should probably be more on that list, but the objection that will get raised is the list will grow until basically everyone can't own a weapon, so therefore, no list should ever be created.

Because that is exactly what will happen. Nice of you to at least realize and admit that
quote:

Depends on the diagnosis.

Well that’s a cop out.
quote:

Seems like we already have the tests needed to diagnose many mental illnesses.

And they’re wrong. You realize that the military has been trying to effectively screen recruits for decades to determine their future mental health and how they will respond under pressure.

They have not and will not succeed. It’s fricking impossible.
quote:

None. If you have a diagnosis, you have a diagnosis.

So, an activist anti-gun mental health expert fails any and all people who go to him. They have no avenue to appeal?

You do realize that mental health is fluid, and diagnosis are widely inaccurate ALL the time. And often need to be diagnosed by SEVERAL doctors, not just a one and done.

So you’re okay with activist striping people of their rights because they determine someone unfit?

That is quite authoritarian of you.
quote:

Yes. Flawed system now, flawed system then. Apply for a gun, have to go through mental health testing.

So a waste of money.

You're not saying anything but rinse and repeat what we already have.

You haven't been reading anything I've been posting.

Go tell that to the parents of the kids in Santa Fe and Parkland. Tell that the kids and spouses of the people in Vegas. That's just this year, and it's not all encompassing in any way. Go tell them, "But, gee, we're doing really well, the numbers are much better," and see if they say, "Hey, you're right. Why bother doing anything else? We're on the right path." Know why you won't? Because we can and we should do much better than that.

No one will ever take you seriously when you choose to go with feelings over facts.

I've never said any of these killings are acceptable and I've never said our system is perfect. I'm saying that we need to be careful in how we go about coming to a solution. If you people would stop standing on the graves of dead kids in order to enact your dream of full government control, you might make some headway in the argument.

Because they do not exist with the sole purpose of investigating, arresting, and/or detaining American citizens.

They also are involved in direct military engagement with foreign powers.

Police militarization is a real issue.

I have breaking news for you buddy.

Civilians own tanks, anti aircraft guns, explosives, machine guns, dynamite, mini guns and all sorts of other stuff

How many of those are used in crimes each year?

ZERO

Well, one of the main arguments for owning guns is to defend yourself when the government decides to become tyrannical and take over, so why shouldn't citizens be permitted to have military grade weapons as well. If there is a reason to limit citizens use of weapons, there has to be a reason.

Libertarians don't normally resort to appeals to emotion. If we're going down that road, we can justify all sorts of government. "Go tell that to the family of the kid that overdosed." "Go tell that to the family destroyed by Mr. X's gambling/porn/marijuana habit." Etc.

Instead of focusing on underlying problems, i.e. these whacked out kids, "gun free" (target rich) zones, relative lack of moral absolutes in our society, some folks want to rush straight to the "take the guns away from the people that didn't do the shooting" step which just doesn't/hasn't/won't wash in this country - at least not to any significant degree.

Guns = freedom. Period. It's the reason a shooting war started between New England colonists and the British authorities. I'm not predicting the future collapse of society - I'm saying I can't predict the future, so I want to have as flexible response as I can have under the circumstances. That includes firearms and ammunition, by the way.

American citizens should be trusted to employ anything a rifle squad or law enforcement tactical team has. We face the same threats they do.

I don't disagree, but the majority of responses in this thread would lend themselves to still do nothing.
