Because the breadth of "media" today is VAST, while the depth is extraordinarily shallow. Any dildo with a twitter or facebook account thinks he/she is a"journalist" and their opinion is truly relevant (it's not). Thus, there is a daily struggle for members of the media to "discover" issues they feel are relevant and that haven't been addressed by the numerous other media outlets.
In other words, when you have so many people shouting the same thing you have to shout something different in order to be heard. Otherwise it is just all white noise. That's why so many completing insignificant matters become "news stories". They are just trying to get you to look at them as opposed to the thousands of other morons vying for attentions

I fly for a private company and work with multiple billionaires (Im poor definitely not trying to brag here) and they always keep cash on them for tipping. They are always throwing $20/100 bills to ground crew and their handlers that assist them. People with that amount of money don’t care about keeping $1000 in cash on them or way more depending on where they’re going. It’s equivalent to me having a couple of ones for the vending machine.
