Who was the WORST President America never had?

Who lost the Presidential election that would’ve been the biggest disaster if they won?
Caveats:
* People that actually ran.
* Candidates of the two main parties. No 3rd parties.
Candidates that come to mind:
* McClellan. Would've let the South won the Civil War.
* Hillary. Corruption.
* Aaron Burr. Wanted to become king of America.

George McGovern immediately comes to mind.
It’s harder to rate some of the more recent candidates but Gore being in charge on 9/11 would likely have been a clusterfrick.

We've dodged some bullets right there, just in my lifetime. Yeah, we got hit by Brandon, Obama, WJC and Carter, but on the whole, could have been a lot worse.
Frankly, the last Dem who lost and was worth a shite was Stevenson (1952, 1956).
(ETA: McCain and Romney would have been pretty bad, but considering the alternative ...)
