Absolutely not. He broke up trusts that were destroying small businesses and raping the American public. He negotiated the Panama Canal to increase trade. He argued for the rights of European countries that colonized South America and Africa. And he put in place good regulations to ensure food safety and reduce child labor
I wouldn’t call him progressive, that compares him to Obama who was progressive for supporting men pooping in women’s bathrooms

As President, he pushed executive powers to new limits, arguing that the rise of industrial capitalism had rendered limited government obsolete.
quote:
He took on the captains of industry and argued for greater government control over the economy, pursuing a two-pronged strategy of antitrust prosecutions and regulatory control.
He pushed through legislation that gave the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) new powers to set railroad rates, laying the foundation for the modern administrative state.
Casting himself as steward of the nation’s natural resources, he presided over the birth of the conservation movement.
Hell, he was a member of the Progressive Party and ran for POTUS as a member of it.

Huge progressive
You say that like it was a bad thing.
You realize “progressive” issues at the time were clean meat, 40 hr work week, safe housing, voters get a say in the govt., those type of things.

Giving Iran 100 Billion in cash was making America great again?
Doubling the national debt made America great again?

Unhinged capitalism and corrupt governments were bad things.

that's a hell of a euphemism for "gave black people freedom." Call me crazy but I think the freed slaves were grateful for it.

Anyone who experienced life in America during LBj, Nixon, Ford, and Jimmy Carter will clearly say that Ronald Reagan was tGOAT POTUS. It was like coming out of a severe depression and being born again, if for no other reason then he made us believe in ourselves again, and he handled himself and the office with such class and dignity. The Gipper will always be tops in my mind.

He only went to the Progressive Party after the Republican Party pushed William Taft (instead of Teddy) bc they didn’t want a 3 term president (Teddy). And the Progressive Party didn’t mean what it would mean now. This was over 100 years ago
And you can cite all you want about him breaking up trusts, but it’s well documented how trusts were holding down the US economy and subjecting workers to terrible conditions. His policies were government interference to protect the well-being of the majority, not instituting weird shite that progressives want today. Without breaking up the trusts we wouldn’t have emerged into the world leader country we have been since world war 1

I’d put Washington #1. Not just for all the precedents he set, but because he refused so much power. He isn’t called the American Cincinnatus for no reason.
I wished he had set a better precedent for the role of the Vice President.
Hard not to put Lincoln at #2 or tied for first.
After that there’s a lot that could round out the next 5 or so.

Cant believe nobody has mentioned the author of the Decleration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson.

For real. Trusts were bad. There were two anti-trusts legislations that occurred when TR wasn’t even in office.
TR would be a racist, war mongoring right wing kook in 2018.

the author of the Decleration of Independence,
I’m not surprised no one has mentioned him as the GOAT. I can’t imagine any way to place him over GW and Abe.
I agree with Ron being mentioned so much as far as the last 50 years. Not the GOAT though. Please.

Teddy Roosevelt. He's everything as president should be: former military, held a multitude of jobs, avid outdoorsman, larger than life personality, and most importantly speak softly and carry a big stick.

Anyone who knows a bit of US history and a bit of economics can figure out how bad those trusts were for the US at that time. Of course TigerFaninSouthland can’t get past the word progressive so he won’t be able to see that

He eliminated habeas corpus, so it's extremely difficult for me to put him in the top 50 percent.

Though he did pull off the Louisiana Purchase, Jefferson's presidency was riddled by British bullying, which he mishandled for the most part. We eventually got the War of 1812 out of that, but that may have been inevitable anyway.

Thomas Jefferson's political philosophy was completely at odds with his actions as President. Because he was a living contradiction, I'm going to decline to give him the top spot.
