*my opinion
At the time of its writing, the Emancipation Proclamation was purely propaganda. Support for the war in the North had faltered badly, and Lincoln piggybacked the Union victory at Antietam with the EP to regain support for the war. Yes, Lincoln was anti-slavery, but until the 13th Amendment, slavery was simply a means to an end for him.

Emancipation proclamation only freed slaves in rebellious states. It was all fluff. Slaves in border states that remained enslaved. Nice job Abe, congrats on being responsible for the death of 600k Americans

not an unfair take.I did admit his primary objective during the war was to preserve the union; he wasn't some ardent abolitionist during most of his presidency. But the fact is that he WAS instrumental in the abolition of slavery. It's not unfair to point out the nuance or even cynicism of his policies. Of course on this board, you're going to hear from some poster (not you) still butthurt that the Union won that Lincoln was an evil racist and kind, benevolent Nathan Bedford Forrest actually wanted to advance the freedom of slaves.

when debating politics on this board remember that there are people here who have stated that kids who survived a school shooting are "pieces of shite" because they are pushing for more gun control. I mean, I can get disagreeing with them, but the poli board members were saying things like "if those are the type of people Cruz had to go to school with, well. . ."

I can understand those putting forth Washington. The only thing that I see it being backed up with is the fact that he chose to step aside after two terms, which is admirable. The fact is that Washington didn't really have a taste for governing. Most of "his" policy, which was precedent for presidential action, came at the advice of Jefferson or Hamilton. As someone stated earlier, these two were in a constant tug of war over the shaping of the new nation.

James K. Polk

He said he'd only served one term & did just that. He brought in Texas & then the southwestern U.S. Told the Mexicans to frick off, it's ours. Told the British the same thing about the Pacific Northwest.

And before the Mexicans start crying w/ their "theft of their territory," they're darn lucky Polk didn't send his folks back down to Mexico City & tell them we were taking all of their territory.

The guy believed that the U.S. was destined by God to own all land from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Without that, where would we be today? Hardly the military & economic power we are because we have wide open access to the two major oceans.

I think it’s interesting how southerners view Lincoln. I grew up in the North but have lived in the South for 20 years.

The differences in perspective are remarkable.

This is why I stay off the poli-retard board. Top shitshow thread on a Sunday morning on the OT.

ETA - Disregard the OT reference. All else applies.
