I’m a Mason.

I can only tell you what my lodge does.

A couple of fundraisers a year and 1 bad spaghetti dinner per month.

I am sure some members are high powered influential types. But most, even those of the higher degrees are harmless types who engage in getting together some nights and weekends. They engage in charitable activities, raise mone for Children's Hospitals, etc and some get into stupid looking buggies and ride in Mardi Gras parades.

There really is nothing freaky or all that weird going on

Isn't that exactly what the attendees of a Wannsee conference would say?

Ok thanks for clarifying. That's why I qualified my answer with "my understanding". I have researched cults and would come across those references about Hubbard. I am pretty sure I am correct about the others and say Mary Baker Eddy(Christian Science) but I have no independent verification of this. Just wanted to clarify what I have run across in other studies vs making certain firm claims, thus my qualifiers in my post.

All I know about Masons is that the head of each lodge is called the "Worshipful Master", and he's the only one allowed to wear a hat at their meetings.

Hubbard was a member of some odd organization based out of California, the OTO (as I recall). He was friends with the founder of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory who was a ranking member. But that organization has zero connection to the Masonic community.

That said, Masons worldwide number around five million with about half of those being in the US. With numbers that large, and with the somewhat autonomous structure of the blue lodges, you’re going to find a bad egg or two. That’s just life; but those people in no way represent the ideals of masonry.

If you want connections, this is the club to join. Very affluent people in the ranks, a lot of connections to be had.

I just want to join a club that has a secret hand shake, similar to this:

For the most part its a fraternity for adult post college men.

It's for charitable causes, socializing, making connections, and promotes bettering yourself as a man.

Also lots of drinking and golf

I only know 2 things about the Free Masons:

1. The only guy I know IRL who is one is about 70 years old, sits in the gym lounge drinking coffee and playing with his cell phone for an hour, then shopping at KMart in a scooty poof. But he's a very nice guy.

2. It's a central part of a terrific movie, 'The Man Who Would be King'. It claims that Alexander the Great was a Free Mason.

They support the Shriners Hospital for children. Their charitable work is pretty significant.

They also drink a lot from what I’m told.

Keep asking and you won't be around much longer.

They don't like questions.

Why do real masons not allow blacks to join? I understand they aren't allowed to be part of the whites so they made their own Prince Hall Masons. They like to flaunt their memberships with shirts, rings, stickers, etc. The whites are more low key.
