Doesn’t matter . Engaging the threat and taking his attention from unarmed bystanders is the primary objective. In nearly every instance this happens the gunman is killed or takes their on life when engaged with someone shooting back.
Lunatic gunmen are not so tough when bullets start coming back at them.

No he didn’t hit the active shooter but his fire drove him from the scene after which he rendered aid to one of the victims. It seems cornered by police the shooter took himself out
