What's the story with Zhu Yi, the American-born skater who became a Chinese citizen

She gave up her US citizenship in 2018 to be able to represent China in the 2022 Olympics
I'm not watching the Olympics, but I've seen news stories that say she has not performed well:
Is she going to live in China after the Olympics, or will she try to return to the USA? Cause I gotta be honest. I don't want her back

I'm not watching the Olympics, but I've seen news stories that say she has not performed well:
quote:
Zhu was chosen as the lone women's singles entry for the Chinese Olympic team, and began the 2022 Winter Olympics as the Chinese entry in the women's segments of the Olympic team event. With the women's the last of the four short program segments, the Chinese team was in third place going in, behind only the United States and ROC. Zhu fell on her jump combination, crashing into the boards of the rink, and singled a planned triple loop. As a result, she placed last in the segment, dropping the Chinese team from third place to a tie for fifth. The performance drew considerable criticism on Chinese social media, which also focused on her lack of fluency in Mandarin Chinese and perceived privileged background. Zhu said she was "upset and a little embarrassed." In the free skate, she fell twice and again placed last in the segment. China finished fifth in the team event.

I don’t think she will be seen anytime soon.
They don’t take losing well. The Uighur who lit the flame has also apparently disappeared after faring poorly in their event.

There's another one, 18 year old American skier Eileen Gu. She has been competing for China since 2019.

I believe she mentioned a long break away from skating. Something about going camping

Giving up citizenship is not a US nor an IOC requirement … did she actually do this? Is this a Chinese requirement?
Athletes have done this for many years. In Sochi there was some older lady who competed for some small island nation even though she was from somewhere else and she became the oldest winter Olympian - just a publicity stunt. And wealthy athletes have done this a number of times because they couldn’t make their nation’s team.
My problem with this skater and the skier who did it isn’t that they did it, but that they did it with another major nation … a couple of Chinese chicks who have worked their entire lives to get to where they are and who would have been happy to represent their home didn’t get to go because these couple of selfish girls. Pretty shitty if you ask me. I’m also bothered that these Americans chose China; maybe not quite as bad as competing for the USSR during the Cold War, but it still doesn’t seem very patriotic.

Sounds like operation Fried Ice worked out as planned.
Good.

the Olympics has outlived its purpose.
It's time to disband it.

The skier Eileen, I don't believe she gave up citizenship but wanted to do it because her mother is Chinese.
I don't understand this at all. I guess there is money to be made from Chinese endorsements. I suspect that is the sole reason.

I think Chyna won't do dual once she turned 18. But yes...way way way more money for her to make over there than here for her. I think she has a VS one here, but sport wise I think she'll be way more profitable there..if she does well. Apparently this Zhu Yi girl is getting eaten alive by their social media over there after what happened.

Chinese figure skater Zhu Yi has faced vitriol online after she fell during her debut performance at the Beijing Winter Olympics. The 19-year-old, who was born in California, gave up her American citizenship to compete for China.
The teen left the skating rink at Capital Indoor Stadium in tears Monday after she fell twice during the free skate event, part of women's team competition. China finished fifth in the event.

Beijing is paying her a small fortune. She was also accepted to Stanford.
Edit:
She's also a model for Victoria's Secret and Louis Vuitton.

One of the biggest bitches about her, from her American peers, is that she full advantage of U.S. training facilities most of her life o get where she is now...at least before she fell & ended up 5th. The USOC has refused any comment last I heard.
