re: What's cooler? Pronouncing "Keeev" or "Key-yev"?

In many languages, individual vowel sounds are not direct analogs of English vowel sounds. To a lesser extent, the same can also be true of some consonants.
It is often difficult for the mouth of a monolingual person to form the exact sounds. For example, Americans almost always struggle to pronounce German words which contain umlauts.
It is easier for folks who are bilingual or trilingual, because the English “muscle memory” is less strong.
My rule is to attempt to pronounce place-names (as closely as I am able) in the same way that a resident would pronounce them

"Here we say 'Kyiv' not 'Kiev,'" Taras Ilkiv, a Ukrainian journalist ... explained in an email, "because 'Kiev' is the Russian word." It's simple: in Ukrainian, the word for the city is ???? (Knib sort of), while in Russian, it reads as ???? (Kneb sort of).

Not that much of a faux pas - That would be equivalent to not knowing the 3rd string backup cb on a PAC-12 team.
All this explosion of scientific experimenters in space these days make it hard to keep up with. I lost track completely after the first dozen or so.

What a crock of pompous hogwash.

I fricked a Ukranian Swim Team member from Kiev. She pronounced it between Keev and Key-ev... one syllable, but the i and e are both distinct.

Of course you do.
Strangely you say Germany rather than Deutschland. And you say France rather than "la France". Do you call Japan "Nippon"?
In English, it is actual proper to use anglicized geographical terms for nations, cities, etc. Otherwise you sound like fricking giada laurentis with her retarded super-emphasized italian word for an ingredient in the middle of an otherwise monotone english sentence.

Keev sounds like keef, which is some potent herb.

I met my first (and so far, only) American astronaut in Moscow, Dr. Katherine "Cady" Coleman.
I'll never forget my faux pas when I met her. I was standing next to her at one of those stand-and-grin embassy receptions when she introduced herself as being with NASA working on the ISS project.
I asked her if any astronauts were attending the reception because I'd like to meet one and she grinned, stuck out her hand and said, "Yes, there is........pleasure to meet you."
I felt like such a chauvinist pig I did everything but oink
In my opinion, that is a pretty minor example of male chauvinism. You could just as easily have had the nearly exact same set of circumstances with a male astronaut, and said the exact same thing.
I trained Astronaut Coleman, a class called Fundamentals of On-Orbit Maintenance I and II in Bldg. 9 at the Johnson Space Center (in the ISS mock-up) in 1999 or 2000. If I saw her today, I'd vaguely remember who she was. I'd likely just think I worked with her in my past.
I wouldn't immediately think "astronaut". In fact, of the few dozen I trained, I probably only recall (by face in, in a crowd) 10-12 of them very well.
Was your party/reception at the U.S. Embassy? Or the Embassy Dacha? Or elsewhere?

When I worked in Kyiv for six months the natives pronounced it "Kee-yev."

"Key-yev"
If mispronunciation is cool, then go with Keeeeeeve.
The Keeeeeev BS reminds me of profs pronouncing centimeter "sauna-meter".

Ask the tall dark hair person with balls that testified today. It probably knows.
