The workers at the old GM plant in Shreveport made more than teachers. But both they and a lot of teachers here went bankrupt due to gambling addiction when the casinos moved in.

It wasn't just losing the paycheck. They maxed out 3 or 4 credit cards. Took out 2nd mortgages against equity on the house. Lot of divorce. Lot of moving back in with aging parents.

Yep,

Teachers live the life of Reilly. Easy work, no stress, exorbitant salaries. Is that the narrative? In my experience many, if not most, put in hours of their personal time on school related matters. The ones Ive known
Work pretty damned hard in less than ideal conditions for shitty pay. The pension ain’t all that.

She is full of crap and the folks writing the article just continue to prove how fake / biased news folks have become.

If they didn't look at her budget down the the last cent for at least 3 years then the article is full of shite.

If married and working full time as a teacher, she can't survive, then she is living beyond her means. Has nothing and I do mean nothing to do with teacher wages.

Of course she works more than one job. She is off 3 months of the year. Did they mention the other jobs are just part time? This woman isn't working 2 full time jobs let alone 3.

Did anyone in the article point out it is clear as day she isn't starving to death?

Time magazine so fake news as usual.

“Utility companies do not care that you had a great day with one of your students. They don’t care that you’re coaching the soccer team. They want you to pay for the services that they provide you,” says NaShonda Cooke, a teacher and single mother of two in Raleigh, N.C. “I can’t tell you how many letters I got this summer that said final notice.” Cooke, who makes about $69,000, often skips doctor’s appointments to save the co-pay and worries about paying for her eldest daughter’s college education. “It’s not about wanting a pay raise or extra income,” she says. “It’s just about wanting a livable wage.”

Oh frick you NaShonda, you're getting paid pretty damn well for a teacher.

Reading the article now and don't know why I was surprised to see this line...

quote:

Teaching has long been dominated by women, and experts say the roots of its relatively low pay lie in sexism. “The ‘hidden subsidy of public education’ is the fact that teachers for many years were necessarily working at suppressed wage levels because they really had no options other than teaching,” says Susan Moore Johnson, a professor of education at Harvard and an expert in teacher policy.

Add'l Yahoo Link About Her

Makes $55k/yr. Jobs are "Guest Services" for $9/hr at Rupp Arena, selling plasma, & teacher.

*She has a broken tooth she can't afford to get fixed.
*She had to take a sick day because she didn't have enough gas to get to work.
*She thinks he's a professional because she has a master's degree.

I'll just say it, that woman is a loser. She is the type that no amount of reasonably high income will ever be enough. Let's assume how much she works. I'll conservatively estimate from the articles her monthly plasma ($300) & Rupp Arena work ($400) & teacher ($4583) for a total sum of $5283 per month.

This story is a lie. And anyone who believes it is a fool.

She has probably lost lots of years of experience moving around from job to job. The fact she’s driving an hour one way to school is probably because she’s a cancer. Know how hard it is to get fired from a public school job?

no

my mom was a teacher

she raised 3 kids (who all went to college)

it wasn't luxurious and we were poor. at no point did she work 2 additional jobs AND donate plasma

In Vor's world, apparently nothing exists between "the life of Riley" and selling your blood to be able to eat.

in many places, they aren't. this lady isn't paid "garbage money" (hence the thread)

quote:

It’s a noble profession

it is noble, in the abstract

however, the barrier to entry is VERY low and there is an oversupply of qualified candidates because of this

also, you run into the double issues of state-run schools dominating the educational industry AND unions having so much power. the pay structure in either is going to frick over the new entrants to benefit the older people for no rational reason (seniority isn't rational)

She makes 150% of the median HOUSEHOLD income in the city that she lives. Let me do some simple math for her.

$59,000 income
The Trump tax cuts are going to make her effective tax rate around 12%, so she is bringing home $4325 a month. Let's start there.

$4325 take home

Let's put her in a nice suburban $250k home like this one: LINK

Her house payment is going to be around $1500. So she has $2825 left.

$200 for electricity, $50 for water, $75 for gas and hell $150 for cable and an iPhone leaves her $2550.

Let's give her $500 for groceries and $200 for eating out. Let her spend $250 on gas every month. The state of Kentucky covers her medical insurance. She's got $1600 left over of discretionary spending. Car payment, fun nights out, etc?

What if she saved $500 a month for her entire 16 year teaching career? She'd have over $200k in the bank.

Cry me a river. Poor life choices. Oh, and her husband can work and earn money too.
