Today I went into a store and got a water and a snack Came to 5.82. I thought for about 5 seconds (I’m a network engineer but not great at math) and said go ahead and put 14.18 on pump 5 and handed him a 20. I have a company car with pretty loose rules but I always use my own money for running around town (hence the minimal gas.)
He looked at me and said “nice math… you know I have a button on here that can just round up right?”
I said, “I’m 40. I’m very aware you can do that but I like to make sure my brain can still do that stuff.”
He said “why would you waste your brain on that when we have machines to do it for us. I’m almost 40 as well and even I know that.”
I will never in a million years demean somebody working and doing a job, because even the most menial job that somebody works and shows up for is worthy of respect, but it almost came out of my mouth “well I’m 40 and unnecessarily putting my own cash into a company car I didn’t pay for to make sure and not overextend my company while you’re at a cashier at a gas station at 40 that won’t do basic math.”
I had to repent of some pride in that moment but it does show some stark contrast in society.
ETA: my goal is always utmost kindness and Christlikeness. Saying that would have been a failure.

The public school system failed the participants in the OP in the academic area of math.
They failed the poster to whom you are replying in the academic area of grammar.
They still failed.
This "gotcha" is lame.
He didn't claim that the people were stupid. He claimed that our educational system isn't teaching basic concepts. That's as true of himself as it is those other people.

I'm sure you are a good person..and I understand what you are getting at. At the same time though, Jesus called people out.
He would tell them when they were slacking and even come up with a parable to help them realize why they should expect more of themselves and do better.
We don't do people any favors by coddling them.

School taught me, let them give me too much change back, and then correct them.
But ya know, everybody do their own thing.

"There" sure are. You should probably shut up.
That doesn't disprove the point.
It proves it, actually.
Proves 3 points.
Stupid autocorrect is a thing.
(I'm guilty of this too) posting without proof reading should be a thing.
Keyboard Warriors are a thing. Say it like that when somebody will pop you one in the mouth. I bet you won't.

Your post only proved that you are too stupid to even understand my post. I was contradicting the person I was replying to, not agreeing with him.
Also, that "Keyboard Warrior" thing goes both ways. I'll say anything I want to your face, and it you "pop me one in the mouth," you're going to jail for assault.
To quote you, I bet you won't do it.
And if I'm wrong (I'm not) and you're willing to face criminal charges (you wouldn't be) for something as inconsequential as something a total stranger said to you, all that proves is that you're a redneck trailer-living-in moron with no life purpose other than to avoid being d'respected.

Just gonna say this…it takes an act of Congress to fail a kid now. They can miss as much school as they want, fail every test and flat out refuse to do any work and they pass. It is beyond a teacher. I fight it every year. We can fail them but admin passes them or parents threaten to sue. That’s the God’s honest truth.

You said it proves a point. I said it proved several points. One point about the person who got hit by their spell check, one point about Warrior being an asss about it, like he does often, and about myself and the other guy needing to proofread.
Soooo... I honestly dunno why your pooper got puckered. But sure, if you wanna go let's go. Come to Chiefs territory, and we can have a good ol' no rules scrap out.

Don’t expect any of them to be able to count it back to you either.
This is technology handicapping society, and it’s much more than just this.

I just went to the grocery store to pick up a couple of things. The total was $9.23. I had some cash in my pocket so that's how I intended to pay. I peeled off a $20 and saw that I also had a quarter so I gave it to the woman at the register. The look of panic on her face was immediate.

I know a local public high school grad that cannot balance her checkbook! No Lie!
I used to work for a bank for almost a decade. You would be surprised to find how many people of all ages and backgrounds cannot even grasp the concept of balancing a checkbook. It is especially prevalent among the younger people though.
I think being educated and intelligent far more than the younger generation is the root of all the “boomers” hate. The younger can’t stand showing how dumb they are when educated adults are around. Petty jealousy epitomized.

They don't have the ability to do quick simple math in their head. I have had similar situation as yours happen to me.

I peeled off a $20 and saw that I also had a quarter so I gave it to the woman at the register. The look of panic on her face was immediate.
The assistant manager saw it too and stepped over quickly to help. He looks at her register screen and says "we'll have to do it this way".
He pulls out his phone and starts doing something with it, then tells her to give me back a wrong amount that was too much.
I said "that's not right" and another manager comes over and starts pushing buttons on the register and comes up with a different wrong amount.
I told them, "you owe me $11.02".
By then a teenage girl cashier and a bag boy had stepped over and both had their phones out calculating.
I said out loud to all of them " A fifth grader should be able to figure this in his head in 2 seconds, we've got to do better". It's true too.
Of course, they all looked mad, and the cashier handed me my money.
I don't care though. We all need to start saying something in these situations. We pay taxes for these results.

Public schools are too busy teaching kids about climate change and gender identity to focus on things like math.

I know Physicians and Lawyers who can't, and who haven't been able to for years.
It's kind of embarrassing
