Finnish military spending, unlike most of Europe, is more than 2% of their GDP. Precisely because Russia is a threat.

They just hit 2% last year. NATO exists because Russia is a threat. Where have the Finnish been since 1949?

Oh, ok. They hit 2% for one year (last year) and their military is already up to snuff. shite just happens that fast, huh?

I'll go ya one further... Why in the **** are WE in NATO at this point? Our country is bankrupt and living on a credit card whose payments are overdue and we continue to throw an expensive party for our "friends" in NATO.

Wonder how long they'd stick around if the power, water , and TV got turned off at the host's house?

I'm with ya. More tit-suckers is about what they amount to. Of course, maybe it would help if our nation wouldn't unbutton her blouse and flash her tits around the world with such regularity.

At the very beginning, President Washington warned us about getting entangled in Europe's affairs. But no! Everyone is so much more enlightened now!

Trinnie - You're absolutely right about this, but there's so much further we need to go with it.

What would be in the downside of Finland and Sweden joining? Finland has already beat back Russia in a war. Both FIN and SWE already have a decent military for their size and economy.

I'm not worried about Russia. But, it would be nice to have them in a NATO coalition war with China if it comes to that. Even a war with Iran or NKO.

Turkey is a snake. They are a part of NATO. They play both sides of the fence. They are in a constant war with the Kurds, allies of the US. I'd boot them in favor FIN and SWE. I don't see a downside of them joining.

You know how the USA always goes into countries and teaches their military? The US Army and Marines have been coming here for a few years now, Learning from the Finns. It's invaluable cold weather training and the USA is behind on this.

This is not a 3rd world country. This country is known to pay every cent of every bill ahead of time.

To the poster asking for the wominz, you can't have them, I found them first.

Disruption in international economic/trade is most devastating to the country with the largest GDP and multi-continent trade. NATO is the strongest military alliance in world history, which is why the UN has to request NATO do the jobs necessary when conflict breaks out.

This is true everywhere and we still are the most stable country with the most stable currency. That's why the inflationary effects of Covid spending are hitting us less than other countries and the USD is stronger than it's been in some time.

We're not doing what I'd call "well", but we're doing better than pretty much anyone else who matters.

If you want to see America crumble, disrupt international commerce and trading. We have shown we can survive with printing, but we cannot survive when trade is disrupted. Pax Americana has a high cost, but it's been shown over the pat 50-60 years that the benefits and profits outweigh those costs.

Yeah if anyone thinks the US wouldn't step up if either Sweden or Finland was invaded, regardless of "Nato membership", they're kidding themselves.

This. Putin seriously miscalculated when it comes to the Finns. They know how to fight and have always been a problem for Russia militarily.

The days of the US needing a stable world for trading passed decades ago, we have been in a trade deficit for decades, and every year it gets worse.

Oh there are the "new world economists" who tell us trade must always balance you silly goose its a simple accounting measure, it must balance each year there is no "trade imbalance".

Oh they are correct, we buy far more goods than we sell and the balance is made up in....cash. We buy goods from china and they buy, our land, our companies, influence in our govt and universities. And we see it in our daily lives.

While we piss away money on IDB, World Bank, UN, NATO, china builds infrastructure with loans, and takes the assets when payment is not made. Those same countries you speak of because of our benevolence laugh at us openly when we ask they pay their fair share. They scold us about our human rights while we protect them. They protect their markets while they exploit and devestate ours.

And our politicians help them with onerous taxes to drive our companies and future capitol offshore never to return.

If Europe wants nato let them have nato. We should save that money and form a balanced economic alliance with India. Far far far more beneficial to us than Sweden or Finland.

Eh…I used to think that the “one world government” would emanate from the UN, but now it’s looking like it will be NATO.

I'm not certain that I'd agree that the benefits and profits outweigh the costs when the cost is our liberty and independence. We're essentially on-call for the rest of the world whenever they have a problem and want someone else to
1) pay for, and
2) perform the dirty work

Every treaty a nation enters into with another nation requires, of necessity, a loss of some degree of sovereignty. Right now, I don't know that we have maintained our nation's sovereignty enough to be anything other than subject to the whines and demands of our European "allies."

I've spent a lot of time in Sweden. This is a myth. The occasional hot Scandinavian can be very hot, but there are not many. Mainly they look like midwestern American girls. A lot of 50 yarders who turn out to be 4s and 5s.

First, can you link this agreement? I mean the signed treaty that was approved by the US congress. Because those are the only valid agreements.

Second, Russia taking action against American led NATO is like a four year old child taking action against LeBron James.

Oh look, another that knows practically nothing about NATO, NATO's funding, or either of these two countries.

Sweden and Finland will instantly become two of the best militaries in the alliance, both bringing their own domestic arms industries into the fold. Neither one of them are tit suckers--they have managed their own very capable defenses with their own resources for the last century or more.

I think the entire rest of nato paying their arrears on their agreed upon 2% of GDP for the last 50 years might be of more strategic value.

Pay it to who? No one paid the difference when nations spent less than 2% of their GDP on their own defense.
