anc, good for your daughter. She is a rare one indeed. There were so few female engineering students when I was in engineering at LSU from 97 - 2002. You could count them on one hand.

This chart is for both sexes.

Take a look at the x axis. It's percentage of women in the major. The balance is men. The higher IQ majors are majority men, which is the controversy it's aiming to show.

Here's the interactive version with all data labels

LINK

All that aside, I believe women are just as intelligent as men but choose other careers for social reasons. Most of the female engineers that I've worked with ultimately moved into positions in purchasing, logistics, sales etc. as soon as they started families. All but 2 of them married an operator or Itech

Another anecdote, the top graduate of my class was female with a 4.0. Her first job out of college was as a mortgage lender. She's never worked a day as an engineer and I doubt she recommends the curriculum to little girls.

I majored in Physics and the girls in the majority of my classes were few, far between, and just a little weird

Maybe you were to close to it, but to be fair to the women in the major, the men were also a little weird

Surprised Accounting was specified in the graph. From what I recall when I was in school, majority of the accounting majors were women. This was also true for both pubic firms I worked for. Where it appeared the percentages started to tilt more towards the men was the percentage of people that pursued the additional classes so they can sit for the CPA exam instead of just getting the BS

Edit: Thanks WildManGoose, was able to find the accounting majors at ~52% women, and average IQ of 110 (a little depressing for my major )

"This explains the so called wealth gap."

I suspect this graph could explain part of the wealth gap, but for far more people, the wealth gap is explained by choices women make to delay career progression to have and rear children, and -- don't forget the millions who either don't have or don't use college degrees -- blue collar men are far more likely to work in dangerous/physically demanding jobs than blue collar women. Welding, construction, oilfield, ,petrochem, etc. These are male-dominated fields that pay some stout wages.

I think this graph takes men into account. The x-axis is % of Females in that degree field. So 25% female means 75% male......or I guess today male/non-binary/unicorn/etc..

And I have no foot to stand on to say women are or are not as intelligent as men. I've never really looked into it. But if this chart is correct, it states that women either don't have as high an IQ, choose careers that demand lower IQ even though they have a high IQ, or they have a high IQ and just don't go to college.

That IQ is irrelevant and a bad measure of intelligence, clearly.

2 of the MOST SUCCESSFUL people I know are women. One is a Mechanical Engineer who went into the nuclear field, the other is an accountant. The first is in upper management at a fortune 500 company. The other left management of one of the big 3, opened her own firm and is now on the second iteration of getting acquired by a larger firm (getting bought out).

Each are highly intelligent, attractive, motivated leaders who manage business and family life. Each also make enough financially that they afforded their husband the opportunity for early "retirement".

A competent woman can be a formidable force in the business world.

A lot of it is mindset / work ethic.

Some people have a drive to do something very specific and will do anything possible to make that happen.

Others expect shite handed to them instead or look for an easy way out.

You may "believe" that women are as smart as men, but the reality as supported by data is that men have a slightly higher average IQ than women (~0.25 SD), but, as another poster pointed out, are less congregated around the median IQ. Meaning men have more of a tendency to be either above average or below average intelligence, whereas women have more of a tendency to have average intelligence

Nursing specifically is not much more than skilled labor.

You're wrong.
Like any other profession there are good and bad.
Fifty years ago, cardiology was a relatively new science. A cardiologist offered a course of study for nurses in the hospital where my wife was employed. My wife a recently graduated RN, took advantage of the opportunity.
Shortly after this she was on duty. The ER Doctor, GP, was involved with some procedure, when the patient's heart went straight line. The Dr did nothing, so my wife did a chest massage and the patient's heart kicked back into normal rhythm.
In Intensive Care, the nurses must recognize problems, when the Dr is off duty. They make the call in the middle of the night to the Off Duty Physician for consultation.

No one in this thread has really touched on the fact that everyone is born with a particular aptitude, some are more common in one sex than the other. Larry Summers lost his job as president of Harvard for suggesting this might be the reason behind fewer women being in STEM programs.

My sophomore year at A&M there were 6 chicks in my early engineering classes at the start of the semester....by the end there were 2. Looks like the ratio has not changed much in 40+ years. Sad.
