What should be the penalty for "Swatting"?

Definitely should be a felony. It could possibly be considered attempted murder, because that is the goal.

First offense should easily be a couple years in prison.

It is a Federal felony.

5 years on Rikers island.

I would give it the lowest degree of attempted murder. These people could get whoever they're swatting killed, or even get cops killed if the intended victim panics as their door is broken down.
It's also a crime that's highly deliberate, pre-meditated, and requires a real effort up front to pull off.

“ How much lead time should we give him?”

felony- attempted murder, false usage of 911, endangering a police officer, you can pad the charges easily until you get to 35 years no parole in the nastiest prison in the country.

Swatting is no joke.
It wastes police resources and puts lives at risk.
Calling it attempted murder makes sense in cases where the intent is clear, but proving that in court could be tough.
A felony charge though with serious prison time should be the minimum punishment.
People need to know there are real consequences for this kind of thing.
Swatting is dangerous and should come with the harshest of penalties imo.

Whatever the charge is for attempted murder of an LEO

5 to 20.
5 minimum (without benefit of probation, parole or suspension of sentence), 20 max. And should be defined as a “crime of violence,” thus affecting “good time” percentage of actual incarceration time to be served.

6-8 years in prison, 100k + in fines.

I'd go with 10 minimum. Enough to make you think about it for a LONG time.

Tied to boat off coast of South Africa, slight nicks to get em bleeding nicely, then drag em around while waiting on a great white to come from below. This post was edited on 3/17/25 at 4:41 pm

I simply don’t understand how this keeps happening.
This seems easy to trace back to the caller even if they use internet services to call from overseas.

Penalty isnt harsh enough to prevent folks from doing it.

but proving that in court could be tough.
Assuming the cops are called for life endangering circumstances such as kidnapping, i think it’s clear the intent.
If it’s for loud noise or something where it’s more akin to a health check then no.
