What or when is the breaking point for the homeless situation across major cities?

I’ve been following reports in Austin (related to their council races) of various trails across the city being inundated with homeless people wandering around bugging joggers, cyclists, and walkers. Also saw a video this morning of a deranged homeless guy shouting looking for a fight on UT-Austin’s campus. At what point do these cities realize that “compassion” for the criminally insane is not a tenable position? I can’t imagine Austin’s downtown is feeling the momentum it did pre-COVID.

It has gotten a lot better in my limited experience. I remember not seeing a single cop in and around bourbon on a trip in 2021. Had never seen that before.

I don’t see it. The only solution is an asylum system again. Most of those were state and charity funded. Legally it is a different world. I can’t see long term involuntary holding ever being allowed without violent crime.

I remember seeing cops in 2021, they just didn’t give any f$&ks. They just ignored blatant violent crimes being committed right in front of them in broad daylight like “not my problem”. It was absolutely disgusting. I literally went up to an officer who was in uniform and on duty to point out a tourist 20 feet away who had been stabbed and was bleeding profusely while family members were applying first aid and getting a busy signal from 911 dispatchers, and the cop just rolled her eyes, waived me off, and walked away.

asylums are cruel + no person is illegal + all cops are bad + drug laws are racist + sanctuary cities + a million other bullshite progressive initiatives = ridiculous homeless situation that is virtually unfixable in the political climate we have

The people who make the policies are not being compassionate, they are just protecting their revenue centers. They are simultaneously handing out needles and mandating first responders administering narcan to the idiots that OD.
They get money to steal based upon how many homeless their cities contain. Screw the taxpayers that have to put up with all of these drug addicts and the deplorable conditions they create.
They have to keep their homeless drug addicts alive so they can collect.

Add open borders during the Biden years and home prices tripling after covid.
BTW.. My cops friends are told by their boss'es. If they arn't doing anything, just leave em alone...

This is definitely an advantage that China has over us. They can just shoot them and haul them off with the garbage. This is an extremely efficient and cost effective way to deal with this problem.

People without homes will exist. It seems most people want them to exist out of sight. I understand why and I don't think there's anything wrong or inherently immoral about not wanting to live with many of the consequences of living around homeless people.
Some cities are coming up with ways to make being homeless there uncomfortable. Last time I was in Atlanta, was struck by the lack of homeless people. I even said aloud "Where are all the homeless people?" When my daughter and I were waiting for a car for like 30 minutes and we had to sit on a curb, I realized why there weren't homeless people around. Nowhere for them to sit! No benches anywhere and we were across the street from a park (without benches).
Louisiana passed legislation criminalizing homelessness, but that will create its own set of problems including costs associated with arresting, detaining and trying/convicting people without means. It will also increase the strain on the already overburdened public defender systems across the state. And, once the people are released, they will still be homeless.
