Nope. You can't repo a diploma like you can a house/car/etc.

Bankruptcy doesnt require repossession of anything. People bankrupt personal unsecured loans, they bankrupt credit card debt. There's nothing to "Reposess" from that type of debt.

Bankruptcy is not a get of jail for free card. In this case it would be a reduction of the amount owed, put you on a payment plan and your credit is toast for 7-10 years. You wont be able to borrow any money basically during that time.

Im looking this shite up on the fricking government website and you people are coming in here saying… you can’t do that!

If the govt is paying your school, the govt picks your major and career.

Universities have to co-sign on student loans. Watch half the degree programs suddenly disappear.

Student loans can be discharged through bankruptcy.

Federal Student loans are not bankruptable currently. It sticks around for at least 20 years and after 20 years of payments the govt just forgives it anyways if there's any balance left.

There's ways around that, like going private potentially getting a loan (or consolidate the debt) and paying off the federal debt that way, then that NEW loan could be bankruptable. But the govt put in very strict conditions over the years about making federal student loans almost impossible to bankrupt.

Poor wording on my part. I was trying to say they should be able to discharge it in bankruptcy. Also, no interest should accrue while student is in school on any student loan.

Students should be permitted to borrow only the amount of tuition/fees, residence hall costs, basic meal plan in campus dining, and books. These students borrow WAY more than they need to fund the lush off campus apartments with all the amenities, buy cars, get the latest phones and equipment, travel extensively during spring break. I work on a college campus. Students complain all the time of how broke they are and they have to work so many hours that they don't have time to study/come to class, etc. Meanwhile, they have the latest phone, sneakers, sun shades, watches, and tell me about their trip to Europe during semester break. They aren't buying that with the money they make at a student job in the library.
