And "just pay back your loans" is not an option.

So the most obvious solution is off the table?

Well...nothing then.

Revert the loan process to the private sector. Make applicant prove “ability to repay” like they have to do with every other loan. Back the loan with either a co-signor or asset deposit. Show grades from previous year to prove viability.

Why is this not an option? It is with every other type of loan... It's what a loan is BY DEFINITION.

Only give loans to actual poor ,capable students. Not those who will buy a car , a ring for the girlfriend, or a condo down payment with the loan. And yes I know those people who have used the student loan for those things

In a rational world the consequences for the cascade of bad decisions that led to this point should be shared by the responsible parties: the students who took out the loans, the banks that made the loans, and the universities who took the money. All parties are complicit in this shite show. Going forward, the federal government should have no role in financing or guaranteeing loans for college.

Well for starters the government created the “student debt crisis” by making it zero risk to give loans to anyone.

So certainly more government isn’t the answer

Let all the Democrats that think paying off this student debt is a great idea pay for it. They can make a "fund me" page and all donate THEIR money.

After all there are supposedly 81 million of them.

Yes it is slick.

Absolutely. And, it's only a "crisis" to those who need to get off of their arse and pay their bills. Certainly not a crisis to me regardless how it turns out.

Tie student loan interest rates to the employment rate in the field of the degree (so art majors can't pump the numbers up working at starbucks).

You are given a variable rate when you sign, and are told that for more in demand/useful jobs you will receive a lower rate. Let the government back these loans and give doctors and engineers like 1% or even .5% just to cover the admin. Womens studies majors, art, etc can pay the 5-6%+

national service requirement.

This already exists for military service members (not really loan forgiveness, but GI Bill) and for people who perform public service or work for a non-profit (Public Service Loan Forgiveness).

I would:

Permanently end federal student loan program.

Those who still owe student loans are expected to pay them back.

Figure out a way to "encourage" public universities to only offer degree programs that provide for gainful careers.
