I’d say we can explain it with math. Older generations didn’t have as many post graduate options. There is a much smaller gap in political leanings among them, and there are fewer of them.

In the other end of the generation spectrum, younger generations tend to lean democrat. There are more of them, they tend to be in the college age group, and there are more post graduate degree options for them that are so much easier to obtain than what the oldies had access to.

Republicans are more likely to be small business owners because of the core values of their political leanings: hard work, self reliance, respect for the law. It’s hard to be a successful small business owner if you think everyone should be paid the same without regard to performance, reliability, skill development, and so on.
