What does being an American citizen mean?

This is going to be at the forefront of a lot of national political news in the coming months IMO.
This is no longer and question that can be ambiguous. The course of this countries future will depend on how this is answered and defined within the United States legal and political systems if not constitution.
Thought?

For some groups it means you have to go to work every day and give most of it back to the government. And you better make sure you obey every traffic law on the way to work and buy a sticker for your car every year or you’ll have to pay more and probably be late for work
For everyone else it means free shite for life and no laws

SCOTUS brought this meme to life yesterday.

It means the US govt. robs the shite out of me to the tune of 54% of my income, while others roll on freeloading without a care in the world

It means nothing.

It means nothing anymore. The rule followers pay the taxes, and the lawless live without consequence.

That's not the answer. If it were this would not be an issue.
It means a great deal to an American citizen. Probably more so than to be a citizen of any other nation on earth.
The question is what is an American, and what specifically does it benefit people who are not to make them want to become American citizens even if in name only.

It means that you will hold hand over heart when saying the Pledge of Allegiance and when our National Anthem is played.
It means you work to provide for yourself and your family.
It means when you resist/fight all the enemies of America, within our nation and outside our nation.
It means you speak English and assimilate into our culture.
And so much more.... many of us were raised in a time that taught us these things. It's not that way anymore.
I hate to say it, but if the manner in which we raise and educate our children doesn't change, we're doomed.

I certainly understand and respect your opinion, but I don't fully agree. It does still mean something to the majority of Americans. That's what got Trump elected. But Trump isn't a king. The burden is on we the people to vote for better congressional representation.
The state of this nation has been much improved since Trump took office, but sustaining that change requires us to elect folks that will stand for what we believe. IMHO

I think what you're talking about is what makes a good American citizen. That is different than simply being a citizen.

It's merely an administrative status that qualifies one to vote in US elections and to obtain US welfare and other freebies.
There is no prohibition against actively using your citizenship to advance the destruction of the USA.
HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY !!

Doesn't mean a whole lot to me (and my family has been here since Jamestown). Sure, the U.S. has its perks in terms of economics and quality of life, but if someone asked me "define what an American is" I would have a difficult time answering. We have no culture, no unified religion (like the Muslims), very little history, we use someone else's language (Britain), and a very large portion of the country is now foreign born.

According to our betters on SCOTUS, it means nothing.
Not that I agree with them at fricking all but hey, that’s just what the men in black said.

It used to be that being born an American was like winning at lottery at life. You had the freedom to do just about whatever you wanted, so long as you did not tramp on someone else's rights. With no money at all, could get help getting a loan to start a business, or learning a skill. If you worked hard at what you did and people were satisfied, you could earn a living to support a family. There is no other place like that on Earth. Now....
you can come here uninvited, have a child and that child has all of the same rights as you...no questions asked. You can get free money from the government for sitting on your arse. You can get free school and medical care.....Something is wrong with this picture.

When do you think this dynamic changed?

It's been that way for years, but it has gotten progressively worse over time.

Do you think that poor migrants are limiting your ability to be successful?

Not me personally, but that's not the point. The point being that it's a national security issue as well as a strain on the welfare system.

Sure. I'm all for protecting the border. I just don't know why you went on the rant about being able to be successful as an American citizen.
If that ability has been curtailed, it's (mostly) for reasons other than citizenship issues.

Are we pretending that illegal migrants don’t cost U.S. citizens billions and put a drag on our collective success?
