It's impractical. The Global Democratic Authoritarian Socialist Republic of California would bring China in to finance their crashing economy...and what...the adjoining *Republic*/Constitutional America builds a Wall?
Does California get their fair share of the nukes? Military armaments? Treasury Assets?
There are so many fatalistic, and problematic aspects of Secession that it is essentially a non-starter. There will be civil war before that.

Its a possibility, certainly with an influx of low IQ socialist government leeches every day. It could manifest in several ways, as a clean break, or as a band of states who decide to exercise more of their own authority and defy federal laws(probably a truce with the federal government that results in less or no federal funds).
Leftists have seen scenarios like this coming, which is why they are desperately attempting to turn states like Texas purple.
On a side note, can you imagine the improvement of the state it was somehow able to completely stop entitlement payments, federal subsidies etc and devote that money towards maintenance/building of infrastructure. One youd have millions of the worst of your population leave the state and youd have many more than that of productive people moving in.
