Maybe it’s because they spend so much time on planes, but I’m not sure I would be anxious to get on a plane as a Congressperson from Alaska.

Nick Begich died in a plant crash. Don Young died on a plane.
Ted Stevens died in a plane crash.

I believe you don’t get it.

A vote for someone who ranks most favorite to least favorite is worth less than a vote that strategically places 2nd favorite last.

It opens the door to much more manipulation of elections by having people running for office with no intention of winning.

And it gives even more power to the fraudulent ballots that rank said ballots in a certain way.

Yeah if the first choice doesn’t get 50%+1

I think everyone should copy Louisiana’s system anyway. There’s nothing more Democratic than the jungle primary with no regard for party affiliation and the runoff for the top 2. Our country wouldn’t be such a polarized mess

your wording could use some work but I admire the nuance.

I believe you are pointing out that besides voting for YOUR GUY you also vote against the most important opponent by placing them last.

I'm not sure that's nefarious. its a feature.

It’s almost like representative government works better when the representatives actually represent their constituency as opposed to just 34% of it.

How is that the case?

Though I agree with you that jungle primary/two round systems are good as well. The difference between the two is that turnout plummets in the second round in jungle primary systems, whereas in ranked choice systems, the electorate stays the same and the result reflects a broader consensus.

I wonder if Sarah Palin would have run for the Senate seat instead of the House seat if she could beat Murkowski.

yeah but they changed everything to rank choice and can have multiple people from the same party in the general, CA does it and its crazy but sometimes you have 2 Ds in the General

quote:

Under a voter-approved elections process being used for the first time in Alaska elections this year, party primaries have been scrapped and ranked choice voting is being used in general elections. The top four vote-getters in a primary race, regardless of party affiliation, are to advance to the general election.

All I can say is don't be surprised at final numbers. There are a lot of people up here that are like me and only vote for one person. I refuse to rank anyone that I don't like.

So, just for argument's sake 10k people voted for last place person maybe only 5k people ranked so instead of 10k votes being divided among the top 3 there are only 5k.

Likewise, there is always the chance of the Mickey Mouse vote. Dem, Rep, Ind, and Clown party are on ticket. Yes, we actually have a Clown party in Alaska. Everyone votes their party, and instead of ranking all four they put the Clown party as second and stop you can wind up with the Clown candidate.

It is a stupid system that was barely passed, and most in Alaska aren't happy with it. The biggest problem here is the Southeast libs and the remote villages that don't keep up with politics.
