Stan Freberg's Federal Budget Revue (1981)

Stan Freberg, one of America's greatest satirists, lampoons government spending. The amounts may seem miniscule by comparison to today, but the tax-and-spend philosophy remains the same.

I’ve placed my guesstimate at a minimum of 50%......that’s a lot of money saved too, because at least 50% of the government’s tax collections is squandered.

Thats a big reason they ALL hated Trump. No business person in their right mind would operate a ducking taco stand the waist full way (all) of our elected officials choose to. Can anyone imagine taking that business plan to the bank or an investor? You would be litterally laughed out of the meeting.

Very little. The majority of spending is entitlements. You can't just cut that in the budget, it requires a separate change the reduce (or eliminate) the entitlement

I didn’t read OP’s question to exclude entitlements. Entitlements can be cut.

That’s my opinion too. Heck you could cut it 75% and get the same output as before just by requiring the remaining 25% to actually work 8 hours a day.

You could probably cut half the military budget and with the right commanders and generals make it more of a lethal threat

shite, the military probably has the most glut of any government institution

They have never had an external audit, a few years back and a few hundred billion less, they themselves said they could cut a 100 billion.

Ever do 0 based budgeting? Forget the lets cut 10%, the first question is, should you or your department exist?

Everything but the military and court system.
And even the courts are looking very suspect.

The founders never envisioned the federal court system as it is today. The Supreme Court was only supposed to handle disputes between states. There also was not supposed to be all these other federal district and appellate courts throughout the country.

Do a quick calculation on the unemployment numbers by cutting budget by 75%. Have you people ever taken a business course? Cause - effect. The largesse has been built over years and years. You can't undo it with Bewitches' "twitch of the nose".

I honestly believe it is somewhere between 90-95% and not exaggerating maybe more.

I guess it depends on what you mean by cutting 90 percent of the federal government. Are you talking about that percentage of spending, cutting that percentage of employees?

What are you getting at with this?

Basically both. But the budget specifically, and assuming employees go along with it.

I don’t think anybody is suggesting that should this be done (never will be), that it happens in a 24-hr period. A guy that took a high-falutin business class like yourself surely knows change would be affected over a period of years.

And de-employ an entire industry. You people are amazing. I could totally get behind a flat tax. But, there are consequences.

After reviewing the replies, a convention of states is seemingly long past due.

We need to invoke the Article V of the Constitution, may she always reign ultimate in this republic.

Since the 90's I have been saying there should be an automatic 30% cut across the board with another 30% within the following year unless every Dept Secretary prepares a description of each employees duty and what would go unaccomplished without that person's labor.

To hell with all the PR and outreach activities. State the goal of the dept overall and make damned sure every employee devotes his entire work day towards that specific task.

And then a continuing review every year assuming a further 10% cut in staffing.

Cut that shite to the bone.
