Not that I eat much at Wendy’s but whatever.

What’s behind this attempt to capture increased revenue, do you think?

Yeah, it's basically "happy hour."

Inflation, full stop.

Problem for Wendy’s is that fast food is a very elastic demand and they are already on the high end of the cost chart for fast food burgers.

May not hurt them on their slack times but people will go “frick that” once they realize how much a Baconator costs at lunchtime or dinner time.

If a sufficient number of people don't tell Wendy's to frick all the way off on this, others will follow.

I’m assuming surges will occur at breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Isn’t happy hour essentially the opposite in that it lowers prices, though, and at what can be considered a peak time (quitting time)?

They are already getting dunked on in social media, which is a PR loss for them.

Implementing it and having people get sticker shock for one meal, let alone feeding a family, will kill business dead.

Inflation, which always goes back to politics one way or another.

“We said these [digital] menu boards would give us more flexibility to change the display of featured items. This was misconstrued in some media reports as an intent to raise prices when demand is highest at our restaurants,” the Wendy’s spokesperson said. “We have no plans to do that and would not raise prices when our customers are visiting us most.”

“Any features we may test in the future would be designed to benefit our customers and restaurant crew members,” the spokesperson sadded. “Digital menu boards could allow us to change the menu offerings at different times of day and offer discounts and value offers to our customers more easily, particularly in the slower times of day.

As usual, no one ever used the term "surge pricing", but media outlets framed the discussion how they wanted people to hear it in order to create anger to generate clicks. From the looks of this thread, it worked.

Wendy’s To Begin Surge Dynamic Pricing
Wendy's clarified their new proposed pricing strategy in a news release this morning.

No prices will be increased.

They will retain their "normal" prices but during slow traffic periods they will offer "discounts" in order to increase customer traffic.

If they brought back the Super Bar maybe it wouldn't be so bad.

That’s a much better scheme.
