The main difference is we're not a peasant society. We're not subject to abject poverty. We do have a politically illiterate population. We do have many armed citizens that would resist, and most importantly, we do have a Military that will never turn on the population.

That is the “killing of the patient” about which I am speaking. The US is founded on two key concepts: one is the free interchange of ideas, and the other is the adherence of the populace to the principles on which the country was founded, which are general distrust of centralized government and a high regard for individual freedom. Once we knock over either of those supports, the structure will collapse and inevitably be replaced by another, different structure which will likely have little interest in any of the above ideals. A nation founded on the concept of eradicating communist thought is no different in principle than a communist nation devoted to stamping out dissidents. I’m not a big FDR fan, but he cut right to the root of the American problem when he said “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” Freedom is an inherently scary thing because some people are bound to misuse it. That’s the weapon the Left uses to progressively erode your freedom - “Some people will misuse their freedom, so the answer is no one should be free.” The answer to our problems is not outlawing our opponents.
