He was also the original depiction of a Christmas guy in Europe. Americans invented the fat jolly bearded elf we call Santa Claus and the Europeans copied us.

If someone wants to create a new character who is black, then go for it. Santa is a character based on St Nick, who is white. Simply create a new character, problem solved.

We are hosting an exchange student and she exclaimed quite loudly “why he black?” When she saw her first black Santa in a store. Evidently even in France Santa isn’t black.
