Not according to Ken Burns. In his Vietnam War docuseries he makes him look like an honorable man that was put into bad situations. It was a joke.

He was bad, but a little leaguer. There would have never been an Obama, had he not followed a pathetic GWB, and then McCain as an opponent. But yeah, LBJ was the worse in my lifetime.

always knew Burns was nothing but a leftist hack

had no idea he was THAT much of one

Trying to make the case that LBJ wasn't horrible would be like me trying to make the case that Warren Harding was just misunderstood or that U.S, Grant was just naive and taken advantage of by underlings.

Same here but I still loathe Jimmy Carter for leaving those 52 hostages in Iran for 444 days. Most cowardly act by a president in my lifetime.

Worst person who served in the office, without a doubt. And that list includes a few doozies . . . Harding, Nixon, etc.

I always have loved Ken Burns documentaries, and I loved this one too.

However, he predictably made Nixon out to be Hitler, which is fine, but what bothered me is that he completely gave LBJ a pass when he didn’t do the same for Nixon. If anything just make them BOTH out to be the pieces of shite they were.

It got on my nerves so much that I had to look up Burns’ personal life after I finished the series, and of course he is a huge donor to the Democratic Party. His previous documentaries were at least for the most part unbiased, but I think this one must have touched too close to home for him since the events were just a few decades away, and he showed his true colors.

Johnson was an arse.

The last 50 plus years has not been a collection of winners on either side of the aisle - aside from Reagan:

Johnson
Tricky Dick
Carter
Bush 41
Clinton (Republican House kept him in check)
Bush 43
Barry

James Buchanan was pretty bad, with the whole letting the country slip in to civil war thing.

If we're voting I would say, yes, LBJ is the worst to ever hold the office. He was Kennedy's marriage of convenience and we're still enduring his misguided legacy.

I’ve read all of Robert Cairo’s The Years of LBJ Books, about 4000 page total. He was Machiavelli’s Prince. He knew how to gain and maintain power. What he did in the Senate was pretty impressive. However, he was not a man of strong moral conviction and hence a terrible leader. Prior to becoming president he never had to take a stance on a single issue in his career and realized not taking a stance gave him so much more power by alienating the least amount of people possible.
The Vietnam and Civil Rights things, 2 issues he was arguably on the wrong side of both, overwhelmed him and he folded.
They say he “decided not to run for re-election bc of his health”, Butt his poll numbers were so bad from late 67 until he annnounced that he wasn’t running for re-election that he knew he wa dead in the water.
The Great Society alone makes him the worst president ever of what label “the free world”, but the above mentioned examples reinforce it!

It was Carter. There is no question about this if you lived through it, and the numbers back it up.

You forgot Gerald Ford, if he counts.

How was he anyway? I don’t know much about him.

I'm halfway through the series, and I don't think LBJ is getting a pass at all. He looks awful. Probably not as bad as he should, but still pretty bad.

It shows that both Kennedy and LBJ were committing troops to Vietnam in lieu of winning elections, and not doing what was best for America or Vietnam.

Now, I'm not saying the series isn't biased. I can tell that it is. I haven't gotten to the Nixon part, but I can sense that, if they're hard on LBJ and Kennedy, it's going to crucify Nixon. Looking forward to finishing the whole series, though. It's certainly an interesting, in-depth production.

Granted LBJ is the ultimate POS, but how is this different from Bush, or Obama, and now Trump?

For the record, Woodrow Wilson is the worst President of all time.
