Otherwise there was no point in him even mentioning Vietnam just so he could impress with how scared he was of the boys in the red hats.
What he was saying was he was afraid of the boys and he's not easily frightened because he fought in Vietnam.
Except he didn't fight in Vietnam.

I think he is definitely using his veteran status to gain sympathy, but I think he's very aware and practiced at avoiding "stolen valor" by always injecting "times" or "era". Maybe he got in trouble for it before and is now very careful with the term.
