The body of a paddle boarder recovered by state police divers in Edgartown Great Pond on Martha’s Vineyard was identified Monday as Tafari Campbell, a longtime chef of former president Barack Obama, the agency said.
Campbell, 45, of Dumfries, Va., was paddle boarding with someone else near Turkeyland Cove shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday when he went “into the water, appeared to briefly struggle to stay on the surface, and then submerged and did not resurface,” police said in an initial release.
Campbell was visiting Martha’s Vineyard, state police said, and the Obamas were not at their island home at the time of the incident. Barack and Michelle Obama remembered Campbell in a statement Monday.
“Tafari was a beloved part of our family. When we first met him, he was a talented sous chef at the White House — creative and passionate about food, and its ability to bring people together. In the years that followed, we got to know him as a warm, fun, extraordinarily kind person who made all of our lives a little brighter.
“That’s why, when we were getting ready to leave the White House, we asked Tafari to stay with us, and he generously agreed. He’s been part of our lives ever since, and our hearts are broken that he’s gone.
Today we join everyone who knew and loved Tafari — especially his wife Sherise and their twin boys, Xavier and Savin — in grieving the loss of a truly wonderful man.”
Emergency personnel from several agencies searched for Campbell Sunday night before pausing until Monday morning. Environmental police used “side-scan sonar from a boat” to locate his body before divers recovered it, police said.
Campbell’s body was recovered shortly before 10 a.m. Monday morning about 100 feet from shore in about 8 feet of water, police said.
The incident remains under investigation.

Im still trying to figure out how the Obamas were able to purchase that house. he had no money before he became President, and the salary of a President is only 400 thousand a year. something doesn't add up!

You were much more wrong than anyone else in this thread, and there was enough info available at the time of your posts to prove that.
You accused the entire board of “jumping to conclusions” and went so far to give odds as 100:1 that the Obama’s did not know this guy, even though it was in front of their house. It is now obvious that you are the one that jumped to conclusions, based on your own bias. You put your logic on the line, and lost within a matter of like an hour.
