Walter Mondale has died

Walter Mondale, the former vice president whose accomplished career was marred by one of the worst electoral shellackings in American history, died Monday.
Mondale, who was also the first presidential candidate to select a woman, Geraldine Ferraro, to be his running mate, was 93. The Associated Press reported his death, citing his family.
The man known as “Fritz” had his seemingly effortless rise in politics halted twice by Ronald Reagan, once in 1980 when the Reagan-Bush ticket stomped Jimmy Carter’s bid for reelection and then, even more forcefully, in 1984, when Reagan obliterated Mondale’s bid for the presidency. Those defeats put an end to the momentum of an accomplished career that included 12 years in the Senate and four as Carter’s uncommonly active vice president.

He was very liberal, but I think he was a decent man who didn't view conservatives as evil.

That was a different time.

The only candidate in history who went around regularly telling people he was going to raise all of their taxes.
They could have run John Glenn in 1984, and his campaign got the most support, but he wasn't left enough so they screwed him over and rigged their system for Mondale, very much like they did for Hillary in 2016.

If it had been up to him, NASA would have never put another manned launch up in space after Apollo 1.

My favorite Mondale anecdote:
quote:
Starting with Walter Mondale’s famous pledge in 1984 to raise taxes in order to bring down the deficit—one of Barlett’s footnotes reveals this delicious and disturbing anecdote: just after announcing his tax pledge at the DNC convention to wild applause, Mondale turned to Dan Rostenkowski and said, “Look at ‘em. We’re going to tax their arse off.”

No doubt CNN and 60 Minutes will put together a super warm-hearted tribute to him soon.

George Floyd got more state funerals than he’ll get.

You, sir, must correct this outrageous use of Saint George the Pious’s name in your post!

He was so close to winning the 84 election. He only needed about 257 more electoral votes.

My dad referred to him as “Mondull”.
Dull was one of his strong points.

Biden makes Mondale look like Churchill.

He also tried to kill the space program. And I don't mean the Space Shuttle, I mean he tried to kill the Apollo Program. As soon as Kennedy died, he started campaigning to kill Apollo and move all that money to welfare programs. Not even Tom Hanks could forgive him for that, big lib that he is. Hanks really stuck it to Mondale on his series From the Earth to the Moon. Mondale was livid at the way he was portrayed. He denied HBO's version vehemently. No shock that he wouldn't want to be seen as an opponent AFTER America achieved the greatest exploration triumph in history.
Oh yeah, and the NSA was tapping his phones in the 60's and 70's Source: NSA.gov. Apparently his name kept coming up in other taps between American radicals and Soviet agents.
