First of all. Dude had to know it was a man. He even admitted suspicion. He mad he gayed.

The article states that he thought Smith was reaching for a gun. I don't know if he really thought that but that was part of the defense argument

Jury nullification perhaps ?
Perhaps the defense didn’t ask for a lesser included offense of manslaughter to be included, and the jury didn’t think the facts justified a murder conviction ?

If the defendant had no melanin he would be serving at least a life sentence. Hell, this was damn near premeditated murder.

In all seriousness, perhaps the jury thought the state overcharged in going for 2nd degree murder? In any event, this seems to be a severe miscarriage of justice.
