The protocol does not need to be changed. They are trying to kill the person, not scare them. When cops frick up, blame them but multiple cops shooting a guy that had previously been shooting at them is not a frick up. Does anybody here think you are going to shoot at a cop and not get shot in return? Is anybody dumb enough to think that?
Implying it is panicky to shoot somebody multiple times that was literally attempting to kill you is just asinine. I guarantee if somebody had shot at you, you are not firing back once and then checking to see how they are doing.
The thing is I know you are not a leftist so why the leftist attitude to be more concerned about the criminal trying to kill people than the cop trying to stop him?

You have a guy trying to kill someone. The objective becomes to remove that threat. They didn’t just follow protocol. They followed protocol that was meant to ensure that innocent lives were saved.

The ignorance on here is astounding. All the comments are from people who never walked a day on the beat. They clearly have no idea what protocol is and what it means to neutralize the threat. It's easy to armchair QB, but this takes place in seconds. When the perp fired on the officers they return fire until the "threat is neutralized" ! Until his arse is completely motionless then you cease fire. They did their jobs.
Other comments about they can't shoot
Try running some training scenarios with just simuntion rounds, while running and with a moving target. We'll see how well watching Clint Eastwood movies will do you.

I think it’s the same as the Lafayette situation. Don’t let one of your fellow officers be along in firing. If every cop unloads it’s hard for them to say every cop was wrong.

Did you not see that video from a few weeks ago with that security guard that fired once or twice and hit that guys neck, but then stopped? While the guy was bleeding out he got multiple clean shots off at the security guard who got damn lucky.
You never know what or where your bullet hits, when your gun will jam, etc. Once you decide to kill you go all out. If you stop firing to check and see see if your attacker is neutralized, giving him any gap to get one desperation shot off you could both end up dead
You can’t armchair QB these situations.
