Usually there are escort destroyers, supply ships, maybe even cruisers, this is a major fail. Captain and the accompanying admiral should be shown the door.
The better question isn't " how did it happen " but how did a Carrier group allow ANY ship to get that close to our Carrier

Likely in/near a shipping lane where traffic is expected to be close by. The Med isn't exactly the middle of the Pacific Ocean; there are seemingly hundreds of ferries all over the place, cargo, etc. You can't just go firing an AGM-84 at everything that pops up on radar within 25 miles.

It is huge. Those escort ships should have rammed the cargo ship if not outright sunk it with weapon systems.
I don't care what others might say, this was a major frick up. What if the ship was loaded with explosives.
BTW, any word on the damage to both ships? Any fatalities?

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but this is probably that new warping technology that we developed with all of that money we lost the last several years..
Wrong place. Wrong time.

One thing y’all have not picked up on…
CO’s of CVNs….are aviators.
FWIW, I was on the TRUMAN … Maiden Deployment…Reactor Dept.
Long time ago.
So was another Officer named Elaine Luria….who went on to be a Dem Rep and was on the J6 Non-Select Committee.

You think the captain of an aircraft carrier is actually sitting at a wheel steering? Lmao

Well, yeah, it's been like that for 100 years on aircraft carriers. And your point?

Firstly, this should never have happened.
But there are a lot of misleading posts in this thread.
When operating at sea the Carrier group is not bunched up like some assume, its spread out over many many miles and covers a huge swath of real estate.
And its common to have close encounters. You might have a vetted commercial tanker with a captain who is trying to meet deadlines and takes risks.
There are protocols at sea and everyone lives by them from every country. Its very possible the carrier was honoring that expected protocol and then the tanker made a late move. It takes miles to slow a carrier and tanker down. Possible the tanker took wrong protocol when closing.
If carrier was waiting to enter Suez, it may have been operating slowly and not had enough time to gain speed to avoid - if tanker made a late move.
Carriers operate in oceans all over the world and encounter tankers daily. When I was on Chucky V, we had a tanker come blasting out of nowhere and had to do an emergency stop. It was so close I could almost see the eyes of the folks on tanker. It was 100% tanker fault but we were able to avoid due to our speed allowed us to veer away. But the tanker did not make any changes at all. They knew we’d give way and took that risk. Even though they acknowledged we had right of way. This was to go thru Straights of Malacca, the most congested shipping lane on earth.
We really need more info on what happened. Captain is always responsible no matter what. But with so much increased ocean traffic its amazing we don’t have more incidents.

I was a USMC grunt on USS Dubuque getting transported to San Diego when a re- supply ship hit the Dubuque in the middle of Pacific.
At 2AM and the shipped went sideways like 90 degrees.
Scared the shite out of us...Commanders of both ships were relieved.

Been discussed multiple times. They weren't in open water. They were likely in one of the channels or lanes leading to the Suez Canal entrance.
Carrier groups operate across a huge area of ocean when in open water. Like dozens or hundreds of square miles. That can't happen in narrow channels or port areas, clearly. The ships have to basically line up single file to go through the canal, if they are going through together.
Like another poster said, the most likely cause is that the tanker made a late move, and due to where it was the carrier didn't have enough speed to avoid.

Some of these ships are driven by the exact equivalent of the foreign dude driving the delivery truck that ping pongs it's way off of every bollard there is backing into a loading dock.
You are correct. Its a miracle it doesn't happen more often. Get on vesselfinder and look at the approaches for the suez and panama canals. Its amazing how many giant ships are jammed up around there.

Just part of the process of relieving commanders and generals and admirals of their duty if they can't handle the job. Dude couldn't drive his ship properly.

The Navy got rid of SWOC (Surface Warfare Officers Course) decades ago. Junior officers don’t get the basics such as ship handling, driving, or navigation. The Navy preferred OJT to teach them. It’s no mystery that they have had a massive rise in these collisions around that time.
