If you had read the link you would know this is money Iran was due for the sale of oil. It is sitting in a South Korean bank because we ask them to freeze it. The money is going to a bank in Qatar to be administrated by the Qatar government with the intent that they only release it to pay for humanitarian bills. Obviously, the last part depends on The Qataris.

Ouch.

I mean, c’mon dude. I can hardly be called Hank’s biggest fan, but that seems unduly harsh.

I said what I said. Sometimes the truth is harsh.

His support for the mutilation and sexualizing of children for adult’s pleasure is unforgivable and he deserves no quarter

Zero sympathy and we should have expended zero resources and energy to rescue them. Iran has been a "no travel" country for years, if not decades.

quote:

Iran - Level 4: Do Not Travel

Do not travel to Iran due to the risk of kidnapping and the arbitrary arrest and detention of U.S. citizens. Exercise increased caution due to wrongful detentions.

Country Summary: U.S. citizens visiting or residing in Iran have been kidnapped, arrested, and detained on spurious charges. The Department has determined that at least one U.S. national is wrongfully detained by the Iranian government.

Iranian authorities continue to unjustly detain and imprison U.S. nationals, particularly dual national U.S.-Iranian nationals--including students, journalists, business travelers, and academics--on charges including espionage and posing a threat to national security. Iranian authorities routinely delay consular access to detained U.S. nationals and consistently deny consular access to dual U.S.-Iranian nationals.

The U.S. government does not have diplomatic or consular relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran. The U.S. government is unable to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in Iran.

This is a nice way of saying "Iran demanded 6b be unfrozen as part of JCPOA negotiations and the US said they would need political cover at home for throwing in a 6 billion dollar sweetener to enable the inexplicable restoration of a completely useless nuclear deal."

This is not a Griner situation.

The five Americans appear to have been arrested and been convicted of espionage for the horrible crime of being Americans visiting family in Iran. The US absolutely SHOULD be trying to repatriate them. I would have preferred to leave Griner in Russia indefinitely.

The $6 billion is not US money. It is Iran's money, sitting in Iranian accounts in South Korea, that we have caused to be frozen. The deal would involve our releasing the "hold" on those Iranian funds, on the condition that the funds be spent on "humanitarian" endeavors ... whatever that means.

I cannot find any info about the Iranians who are to be released here. Most articles do not even mention a prisoner exchange. Anyone have a link identifying them or their crimes?

Hank the US used to have policy of NO negotiations with terrorists. That policy was killed off by Obama. We had the policy for a reason. It is a unbelievably stupid thing for this deal to even be considered on our part. I DGAF who's money it is. This will only promote more of these things to happen going forward.
