Obtuse and a few others in here know waaaaaay more about this issue than you.
Maybe switch to google to help educate yourself a little more.

Not enough is made of consistently low natural gas prices the last few years. Nat gas goes into so much of what we buy and consume - packaging, pharma, even cosmetics.
This is why if one wants low energy to drive costs, at least one EV is the way to go.

Good thing you are only betting one dollar; you won't lose much.

I cannot repeat this enough.
the SPR is tits on a boar hog for decades, except to global markets. It's creation was after a treaty to a reserve for the West. Then starting in the early 80's the types of crude desired for refineries changed dramatically. The SPR holds two grades, by law, and only two.
The SPR is for replacement in the event of loss of supply from the Middle East. Imports from Canada have replaced almost all of that.
Only the clueless give a rat's arse.

This is a sad comeback.
I have followed this board for a long time and know enough about the oil and gas industry to see who to respect on what they post. Obtuse has always been on point.
Btw, I worked for the company that managed the SPR for the DOE for 6 years. Been to all the storage facilities many times to visit the admin offices for audits and other assistance.
I don’t pretend to be all knowing about the global markets for oil and gas, but I know enough to be able to spot bullshite.

Is NBC news lying to us? When have they not?
Posted on 8/19/26 at 9:02 am to LuckyTiger
the U.S. has never produced as much oil as it does today, yet the SPR hasn't been this low since 1982. Those two facts can both be true.
No panic here, yet. But I’m also not educated enough on the topic to know when is the right time to panic.

Raw reserves aren’t a good metric. You have to factor in US production now vs 35 yrs ago.
When we are a net exporter of oil and refined products our reserve needs are much less than in the 90s.

Well we’re actually using it correctly this time - in a time of war or emergency. Joe raided it because of his fricked up fiscal policy.
Didn't Trump run on no new wars? So, knowing that you realize both Biden and Trump were stupid for draining the reserves.

Until refining has a new source, that capacity remains constant.
