Executives from 3M and Honeywell told US officials that the Chinese government in January began blocking exports of N95 respirators, booties, gloves and other supplies produced by their factories in China, according to a senior White House official.

China paid the manufacturers their standard wholesale rates, but prohibited the vital items from being sold to anyone else, the official said.

Around the same time that China cracked down on PPE exports, official data posted online shows that it imported 2.46 billion pieces of “epidemic prevention and control materials” between Jan. 24 and Feb. 29, the White House official said.

The gear, valued at nearly $1.2 billion, included more than 2 billion masks and more than 25 million “protective clothing” items that came from countries in the European Union, as well as Australia, Brazil and Cambodia, the official said.

“Data from China’s own customs agency points to an attempt to corner the world market in PPE like gloves, goggles, and masks through massive increased purchases — even as China, the world’s largest PPE manufacturer, was restricting exports,” the official said

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Trading with the third world is a stupid economic game.

At this point, forcing them to choose wisely may be necessary. IBChinaman is still wandering around here preaching his garbage.

They're not "finding out" - they always knew this was the case. They were willing to do it because the balance sheet and stockholders pushed them to do it.

They're admitting it, now, not "finding out."

Maybe this will wake the U.S. up. But, I'm not betting the house on it.

Now, who in the frick could have seen this coming in a communist country?

Wait until their factories, including all assets are seized... China will be coming out with the new "cPhone" next thing you know...

I feel the same way about owning land. Every time I pay real estate taxes I realize that I really don't own it. I rent it.

While we're on the subject, Trump should build a national stockpile of 2 to 3 billion masks, 50k ventilators, and certainly in the 10s to 100s of millions of the other critical PPE.

Do it over years, of course, but that's what a real leader does - make things better for the next guy.

Unlike other folks I could name. Folks hopelessly compromised by Red China.

I’m as anti Chinese as you will find, but this is hypocritical when we are crushing 3M for exporting masks and forcing GM to make ventilators.

There isn’t a market economy in the world that doesn’t have command elements in times of war or crisis.

Yet when they need a bailout or tax break they come to the US government. If you don't produce here you should be told to frick off.

They already have knock off Iphones. They have knock off everything. Be very careful if you buy cheap golf clubs online, they are probably knock offs.
