I agree with it.
Why would you want a government deciding what your kid can and cannot see/hear?

The goal was obvious all along. You allow selected social media to function without verification, no govt gatekeepers. Those sites are the beneficiaries.
Sites that don't meet govt criteria are subject to oversight, monitored to prevent "harm" to children. "Sure, you can have your 'harmful' free speech, but we'll check the govt digital ID of your visitors at the door." It's censorship of non-approved speech by the government "for the sake of the children".

And yet they won't protect the children from grooming gangs...only memes.

It’s not “for the kids”. It’s a gateway drug to demand that everyone get facial recognition to access social media. Otherwise, how do we know that adults aren’t signing on for their kids. Get it? It’s the camels nose in the tent, and yes, it’s coming here as soon as the Dems are back in charge.

This is a tough one. My kids definitely spend too much time on their phones. And I’m too distracted/busy/tired to do anything about it (consistently). But, do I want the government telling me (even more) how to raise my kids? Is this a slippery slope? Or, is more like a legal drinking age? I actually might would go for that- just make all social media illegal for minors? If that could be done, I might think about supporting it.
(eats a snickers)…
But then, you create another endless cat and mouse game, with government overreach becoming “necessary” to “fight for our children.” A bottomless pit of untraceable tax dollars, going to “fight” a “cause” that only gets worse, with saber rattling “victories” come election season. Worse than that, can you imagine that being “re-imagined” and enforced by another Biden-like “administration?” No way I want to set a precedent for them to hijack. It seems like something that could get Orwellian- quick. And I know this is a radical concept to some parents, but, we absolutely have control over the phone- and the kid.
Nah. I’ll take less actual government- not more. Have you seen these people?
Also, as a rule (with few exceptions), do the opposite of what the uk is doing.
PS: I’m glad you posted this. This is something (not just social media- more about the whole phone) that I think about more often than I do something about it. I have since decreed (my house is not a democracy) that all phones will be brought to my room and charged overnight at a certain time, depending on circumstances (sometimes we get home pretty late with the kids’ sports).

Being exposed to right wing memes is far worse than being exposed to rape and murder.

You raise an interesting point. Can you explain why the government decreed that the legal drinking age is 21 when it was 18?
You are old enough to fight and die for your country but cannot sit down and have a beer?
As with everything else, it is a shift from parental responsibility to government takeover. Over the last many years, parenting has almost ceased to the control of the government karens telling us what is best for us.

They are in fear of losing power and perhaps their access to "children".
