What was the legal basis on which someone was seeking to "block" this?

A "judge", any "judge" could not block the event. ...as much as he or she may want to.

Their goal was not to block it but to tie it up in court until the date passed.

Ok please explain to me then how UFC which has only been around 32 years seems like the most appropriate sports event to commemorate Americas 250th birthday

explain why not? what Dana, the fertitas, and all the others involved have done with the UFC has been nothing short of amazing.
