I don't think that analysis is correct. I think he will face the death penalty because shooting a firearm in a large crowd is an aggravating factor.

Prisons are probably the most racist and segregated institutions in America. White gangs are dominated by Aryans and neo-nazis. Utah itself has some of these groups outside, so in addition to the general theme of how prisons work, it's pretty much guaranteed that they are inside.
He will have no protection from the white gang from the other racial gangs and I'm sure he will be an enemy directly for the white gang. They're not exactly liberal snowflakes
