My guess is the guys released the Halon fire system and smothered. The Helo saw the halon going off.

This. Halon systems protect electronics. It puts out fire by removing oxygen from a confined environment. If you are unfortunate enough to be in the room, you are in extreme danger.

Occam's Razor says this is the simplest explanation.

I want to see the radio logs, but they were likely already wiped from the transmitter.
