I read an article some years ago in the WSJ about tribal status and its impact on a south Florida tribe who got assistance to get gambling approved. It was a small tribe and the benefits, after expenses were given as a dividend to each member who was 50% blood/dna of that tribe.
The tribal leader was lamenting the troubles the money broAught. One young woman 20 years old with five kids, collecting a dividend check for her and each of the kids amounting (this was 30 years ago) to over 400K with no tax. She was unmarried, different dads for most of the kids, in and out of rehab for years, the kids tossed around from home to home, just a mess of a family.
And some of you need to get the romantic version of "Dances with wolves" of native americans out of your mind. Were there noble tribes, sure, but just as many were murderers, rapists, and slave owners long before they ever met a white man.

Socialism among tribes isnt healthy for its people. They're dependent and impoverished.
I thinking the other day about the plight of NA. Obviously they are better off civilly, economically, live more comfortable, ect. But do they enjoy life more now or when they could just be wild indians? It was a life of struggle and an early death but its hard to believe they could be more miserable than they are now. Going onto a reservation now is just depressing. Leads to an interesting conversation about what it means to live a fulfilling life.

They try to live in two worlds which is impossible. They want to embrace the past, while enjoying the economic benefits of the present.
Their tribalism has produced a tremendous amount of inbreeding, I'm not sure they will never escape that genetic issue.
The villages are a miserable place. Child molestation and rape are very common, having kids with blood relatives is epidemic and they dont value education. Its going to be hard for them to break those ties.

Trump to recognize the Lumbee tribe
So does this give them sovereign land so they can casino it up??
I don't agree with Indians getting their own sovereign lands in our nation. Nothing more "divisi e" than that. Their ancestors lost...so I heard that's the argument against civil war statues.

I think it's about health services but probably a casino situation as well

Well so that's misguided. When the South surrendered they did so under specific terms. Natives had various arrangements some of which were surrenders, others treaties. I get your position on surrendered tribes but what about those with enforceable treaties in place today?

I couldn't give a fat rats scrotum about any of that. Like you said they get plenty of help for medical services and other things from the American taxpsyet, and don't pull their weight. Should come with soveriegn land with their own laws too.

I got lost in the woods one time and ran into some Fukawee tribe members. Nice people.

Have you ever visited the tribal village of the Reginaphalange tribe?

I've lived around natives for 30 years, bucko. They vote Democrat. Youre a fool if you think they'll vote Trump.
Things have changed, Trump isn’t your neocon type you love so much. It’s a big tent party.
Yeah sure there will be plenty that won’t vote for him, but we aren’t trying to get all of them.
It’s like with the black vote, saying blacks won’t vote for trump isn’t the point. It’s trying to just get as many as you can, not that you think all of them will.
And of course it was the Dems that did the Indian removal act.

Now do the same for the Houma’s Indians…freaking travesty.

The Lumbees are no more Indian than they are Swedes.

I tend to agree. A lot of lumbee voters may vote for trump, but the overwhelming majority of other natives will vote Democrat.
It reminds me of the Jewish vote. Religious Jews seem to be in favor of trump. But non-religious Jews are pure Democrats through and through. It's why the overall Jewish vote for Democrats is around 70%+..

I've been pro Lumbee as long as I can remember.

Wrong, every Cherokee kid can go to any college of their choice for free, anywhere in the world. I’ve been friends with several of them in my 25 years in WNC.

Robeson County NC is where the majority of the Lumbee live. I-95 goes through Lumberton and is about a 9 hour drive and almost halfway between NYC and Miami. Even though Lumberton is a dump, I have always thought it would be a good place for a hotel/casino right off the interstate.

I personally know a half dozen Lumbees, they worked for me over the years, and they're all staunchly Conservative and currently very Pro-Trump.
Remember they were the last to surrender in the Civil War and they loved killing the Radical Republicans during Reconstruction.
They worshipped Strom Thurmond and followed his leanings and his transition from Democrat to Dixiecrat to Republican.
They are different from every other peoples in this country and they vehemently encourage the maintenance of their pure bloodline ... although that is changing up around Dillon, SC moreso than Lumberton, NC.
