President Trump is canceling federal student loan debt held by disabled U.S. veterans.

Trump announced the new executive memorandum at a speech in front of the American Veterans organization in Louisville, Kentucky, on Wednesday.

"I am taking executive action to ensure that our wounded warriors are not saddled with mountains of student debt," Trump told an audience of veterans. He is ordering the Department of Education "to eliminate every penny of federal student loan debt owed by American veterans who are completely and permanently disabled."

I guess we'll be seeing a surge in disability claims at the VA.

I'm sure those debts were already charged off by lenders.

Nice gesture, but I'm sure the Progs will twist it somehow.

I'm not against this totally. Those who truly sacrificed limbs deserve some sort of relief.

Now the fun part comes in determining who is actually disabled. Does PTSD count? Broken leg? etc etc.

Don't they already get free college through the GI bill?

I'm not opposed to goal.

I wonder what happens when the next dem president cancels student loan debt for all blacks because reparations.

But I suppose they would do that anyway.

The GI Bill doesn't cover everything. You can use it and still have college debt.

Looks like they will have to get rated as "total and permanent" for the disability, which can be a high hurdle to reach.

I have a friend who has been fighting the VA for almost 10 years to get 90% disability.......even though he works like a regular guy. But his shoulder and knee are shot and he HGH's like a MF. Apparently the VA still didn't get the memo about efficiency.

Same here - I’m all and all ok with it. I do know some guys, however, who have gotten PTSD retirements which seem suspect to me. Don’t get me wrong, I know there are many guys who have the real deal, it just seems like the VA hands out PTSDs like a pill mill doctor in West Virginia hands out scripts for OxyContins.

Disability determination is all about how much each condition impacts your occupational and social functioning. I can't speak for the physical issues, but to get 100% for psychiatric issues you pretty much have to be totally dysfunctional and unable to hold a job or get along with others including family, essentially someone who is in a nursing home or should be in a psych hospital.

Not a fan of this. Yes, I agree that the Country needs to take care of Vets especially disabled but to just hand out more free money that the Government really doesn't have I can't get on board. Now interest free loans for school I'm good with.

This fricker ain't a king.
While I approve of actions like this, there is a proper manner to do so, and that is to work through Congress.
Obama did this shite (executive orders), and it pissed me off as well.

Continuing down this executive order path will open the door for rulings that you may not like.

Checks and balances.
