Trump is right that prior to 1913, tariffs were sufficient to cover the federal budget

What he doesn’t seem to understand though, is that the federal budget was tiny in 1913. A literally fraction of a fraction of what it is today. There is no way tariff revenue can fund the current behemoth

Lets do tariffs for 4 years...get the 4 year running average of tariff revenue, and that will be new budget cap

Thats far more than just simply using tariffs.

Trump did not say that. I could easily burn down that strawman too.

Nah, if youre producing robust tariff revenue it means people are still willing to pay more for imported products and those plants are not coming back.

Funny how liberals are so fixated on things being non-binary & fluid... until it comes to their TDS.

Considering that around 25% of the cost of every product purchased at the retail level is simply embedded corporate income taxes that are passed along the distribution chain until it's ultimately paid by the consumer, the argument that goods would cost more is some serious misrepresentation.

We are going to fund the federal government with tariffs that will incentivize companies to bring back manufacturing so that we no longer have to buy from overseas....and therefore not pay tariffs to fund the federal government.

Kill the income tax system and go to a consumption tax system (which is what a tarrif is).

It's the better model and the consumption tax system can be adjusted to provide the same revenue generated by the income tax system.

Ultimately, I believe this is where he's going with it.

Baby steps. The American people are, collectively, not very quick on the uptake.

Trump: Tariffs Could Replace Income Tax

Currently, income taxes generate roughly $2.5 TRILION

Currently, tariffs are generating around $30 billion per month, or $360 billion a year

Tariffs would have to substantially increase substantially to do this.

But, but, we can eliminate income taxes for those making less than $150k. great, what we need are fewer people with skin in the game.

I mean, math doesn't seem to be a thing.

That would require amending the constitution.

Again, the presumption is that we should be spending the money that we already are, at the federal level.

Many reject that premise.
Including Trump!

That number is low, per Bessent. Almost to the tune of 30% low.
