Trump signed an order on his first day office to grant TikTok until early April to find an approved partner or buyer, but he’s said he’s looking for the U.S. to take a 50% stake in the massive social media platform. He said Monday in the Oval Office that TikTok, which is owned by China-based ByteDance, was an example of what he could put in a new U.S. sovereign wealth fund.

Trump signed executive order 13818- Blocking the Property of persons involved in serious human rights abuse or corruption in December 20, 2017.

Would be a shame if they funded a sovereign wealth fund while they criminally prosecute these filth.

Maybe they should have passed a budget in the last decade then.

This is the problem with populism. The government owning enterprises is socialism. And why would a country in $37 trillion of debt start a sovereign wealth fund? Any excess dollars should retire debt, and we don’t have any excess dollars.

I’m okay with this if it keeps the technology and data out of China.

Maybe this is the right way to improve how we handle mineral rights on federal lands too? I’d like to incentivize exploration even under more progressive regimes.

I think majority state ownership of corporations in critical industries is exactly how you put a thumb on the scale in favor of the state's interests over the interests of the private shareholder's need for quarterly growth. Not saying the two would exist in opposition but the desire for growth is how you see great American corporations outsourcing all their core competencies to other countries.

Neither Trump nor most of his active supporters claim to be that.

He’s attracted that audience because they didn’t have another viable option. Those types tend to passively support him though. A lot of them like DOGE.

DOGE gets them excited despite Trump’s broader policy framework being over the place.

I don’t want the federal government owning private companies.

Uhm... no. The government should in no way own any percentage of any social media platform. Ever. We saw the problem with the government using its influence on social media it didn't have an ownership stake in.

Hard pass.

Small government conservatism in the executive hasn't really existed since Hoover.

Eisenhower and Nixon essentially accepted the Keynesian economic consensus.

Reagan and the two Bushes were both big defenses spenders who cut taxes without the drop in spending to match it.

Trump was basically the same as the prior 3 GOP presidents except he did have an out-of-band crisis that required an almost Keynesian response during COVID.

I don't know about majority, but it seems clear the US taxpayer should participate. It should have happened with Tesla back in the day. Absolutely, the US taxpayer should have gotten warrants/options/upside in the equity. Even 10% would have been noticeable.

I'm absolutely OK with taxpayers having passive upside.
