Good. Let the states decide how to use its tax dollars for education

That’s right. Give us back the Federal education funds going to local school districts. Total waste of money.

You can't just pull the rug out at the 11th hour...especially via EO.

Can another future President just EO it back into existence? It needs to be codified somehow by Congress.

He needs Congress to get rid of the Department too, which, unfortunately, won’t pass

He can skeletonize it. Bare bones staff/operation. Solely to be in compliance with Congressional mandates.

Eh, have DOE head submit a budget that’s 50% less this year, which is a 41 billion savings.

50% less the next year, down to 20 billion

90% less the next, down to 2 billion

Then you eliminate a very minor department. I get (and love) the idea of wiping it out immediately, but my way eliminates a lot of the lawfare.

Brother, we are all mad we get to pay loans back and some people get theirs forgiven.

They are welcome in the club of paying your debt.

IDEA is not going away. 100s and 100s of case law back it up.

Doesn't work that way. Congress appropriate the money. And since we're going to get another endless string of CRs, no one is cutting DOE's budget.

Treasury will handle it, Pro.

Why is the Department of Education financing loans and administering the repayments and forgiveness anyway? Shouldn’t that fall to Treasury?

I would think there would be provisions.

Ask Congress, who passed the statute (under a Republican admin)

As I said, this is Congress's job to do this (and deal with how they will handle funding the programs for the legacy recipients over time)

I imagine courts would rule there is a property right, especially if this is just an EO directly violating the clear terms of the statute (like Biden trying to do SL via CARES). There would have to be some retroactivity involved.

No more billions and billions of taxpayer dollars spent on telling schools how to teach.

Schools and school boards will receive more money instead.
