Technically it is a correction, but it harkens back to a different age when VPs were the second vote getter in the presidential election. I can’t see that these hold any lessons for current events.

I agree it’s not in the New Testament and not directly stated to sound harsh but you don’t just take wisdom from prior teachings and toss them out the window. This isn’t a “hey don’t do this” type of situation. This is a “hey it only brings trouble when we mingle outside our tribes.”
More of a warning for your own good as opposed to a command.
King Solomon is a good example from the Old Testament. Took up some strange then ends up splitting Israel because like men now, he didn’t have the nuts to tell his wives kick rocks.
