The candidates would still have to win election; the VP would just have to vote "convict" in the event of a tie, and bingo- he's president.
Conviction requires 2/3 vote. There can be no tie.
Constitution says that VP is the President of the Senate and shall not vote except when votes are "equally divided." The impeachment section does not speak to who breaks tie votes. It seems to me the VP retains that power.

Been out of the loop...did the witness vote fail?
What's left of the trial - why can't they vote for acquittal today?

Agreed. Tonight late maybe. But the Dims will drag this out as long as possible.

I'm reading that 50/50 is a FAIL on the witness vote. If Murkowski is a yes, that's where we are . . . unless a DEM crosses.

Tie is a winner!
Correct. The motion would be to call witnesses, so without a majority the motion dies.

Shocking that they still pray in that chamber. I would thing they would've labeled that partisan by now.

Frick Romney and Collins. Murk should be voted out
CA, I agree with you except on Collins. It's better to have someone on your side 50% of the time, instead of the other option, which is 0%. Collins is from Maine, look at the rest of the Senators from New England! If you primary her with a Ted Cruz lookalike, your likely to get Bernie Jr to replace her. Now Mitt & Murk, those two are in reliable Red states. They need to be primaried badly, which I think for both is in 24?? Maybe Alaska is 22?
Also, Collins may have been given a pass, with Mitch knowing he has it without her, so she can save face back home.

If they are 50/50 does Pence get a vote on this?

Oh what I would give to have a front row seat in the back room after Nads pulled his "Leroooyyyyyy Jenkinsssssss" moment last night.
I bet Shiffs eyes were bugging out at max limits as he ripped penguin to shreds.

Reported on Fox that there were "loud cheers" coming from GOP lunchroom right before all headed to chambers..
Guessing that they have their 51 votes...
