had an interstate store. I did about 8-10k gallons on weekends, 4-6 during the week. Car wash, sandwich shop, dispensed drinks. I did a brisk coffee business in the AM. Gas wasn’t always the first thing on my mind but when I could make an extra 2-4% margin before dropping, I’d work it. I never wanted to be the highest price for gas but I wasn’t gonna be the lowest either. Fun times. ETA: 30 years ago.

Why did free air disappear? Was it really that much of a burden on the station? And is it true that these pay pumps are typically owned by a third party vendor? Is it just a matter of someone figuring out they could make money selling air?

You get a different answer from the O&G baws everytime something happens with gas.

Iran war starts. Gas goes up real quick. O&G baws: You just don't understand that they are having to plan ahead on the gas they are going to be buying now and it will be way up and they have to account for that.

Barrels fall to low prices, O&G baws: You just don't understand, when they bought the gas that is in the tanks it was at a much higher price.

Three weeks later, O&G baws: You just don't understand, when they bought the gas that is in the tanks it was at a much higher price and you also have to account for risk and demand.
