I didnt suggest that the sitting president shouldn't have a say, just that he shouldn't side for concessions given to Russia's desire for war and subjugation. Prioritizing American interests involves Russia continuing to be a small regional power and stabilization of trade throughout Europe.

It is all about leverage. Ukraine has been causing a lot of medium and deep chaos with fuel and dual-use distribution. A lot was made about the slow plodding Russia was doing toward Lyman but that all fell apart when it became clear recently successfully collapsed the northern arm of a planned Russian pincer movement toward the fortress belt and retook 200 sq km of land.
The balance for Russia overall has been a fairly large net negative for 2026.

No shite. Zelensky's attitude in every negotiating attempt is from a false perspective where Ukraine is beating Russia's arse and Russia is begging for the war to end. So he demands Russia return all land they conquered and give reparations and only then will Ukraine be gracious enough to end the war.
Zelensky has an interest in the war lasting as long as possible. He'll get to remain a dictator as long as the war lasts.

This war has only gone on as long as it has because Russia has avoided just boming that entire country into oblivion.
