Trump-backed House candidate loses Michigan primary to a guy who suspended his campaign

But Hassan lost decidedly to retired engineer Thomas Smith, despite Smith suspending his campaign and endorsing Al Lemmo, who finished third.

This has forced Smith back into the race and he will in fact campaign until the GE. Rather strange turn of events IMO.

Why did Smith suspend his campaign? Candidates usually do that when they have no chance or some huge scandal comes out.
Did they just have shite polling and he thought there was no chance he could win?

My understanding is that ballots had already been printed (and many already mailed back) when Smith suspended his campaign.
